Overview of Programmable Logic Relays

The document provides an overview of relays, including their types (AC and DC relays) and components of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). It discusses relay ladder logic diagrams and distinguishes between open loop and closed loop control systems. Additionally, it covers motion systems and contouring control.

RELAY
•S A Relay is a simple electromechanical switch.
• While we use normal switches to close or open a circuit
manually, a Relay is also a switch that connects or disconnects
two circuits.
• But instead of a manual operation, a relay uses an electrical
signal to control an electromagnet, which in turn connects or
disconnects another circuit.

• DC RELAY
• AC RELAY

TYPES
1. PLUG IN RELAY
2. MACHINE TOOL RELAY
3. LATCHING RELAY

The coil resistance of the AC and DC relay for the same

voltage is different. The resistance of the AC coil is less as
compared to the DC coil.

Control Loops
Open loop systems
• Open loop systems have no access to the real time data about the
performance of the system
• no immediate corrective action can be taken in case of system
disturbance
• there is no feedback system to check whether the program position
• normally applied only to the case where the output is almost constant
and predictable.

Closed loop

• feed back devices closely monitor the output and any disturbance will be
corrected in the first instance.
• applied to the case where the output is subjected to frequent change
• Closed-loop systems are very powerful and accurate because they are capable
of monitoring operating conditions
