Longest Protostellar Phase in Stars

The document outlines the formation and evolution of stars, detailing their life cycle stages from nebula to various end states like white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes. It explains how stars begin in a nebula, progress through stages such as protostar and main sequence, and eventually undergo transformations based on their mass. The learning objectives include understanding star formation, life stages, and the impact of mass on a star's lifespan.

span
A star is a ball of gas strongly
held together by its own
gravitational force. The Sun, our
very own star, is the closest star
to Earth and has been used by
astronomers as a model in
studying stars in detail.

STARS
STARS
Stars are immense,
luminous spheres of
extremely hot gases.
Although they shine
brilliantly, they are not
eternal. They pass
through various stages
known as the life cycle of
a star.
HOW ARE STARS
FORMED?
WHAT ARE THE
DIFFERENT STAGES IN
STAR'S LIFE CYCLE?
NEBULA
-A star begins its life
in a nebula wherein it
is considered as the
birth of a star.
-Nebula is a large
cloud of gas and dust.
PROTOSTA
R
A protostar is the early
stage of a star. It’s not yet
shining because nuclear
fusion hasn’t started.
MAIN
This is the longest phase
in aSEQUENCE
star’s life, where it
spends most of its time.
STAR
The star is stable with
hydrogen fusing into
helium in the core.
-This is also called as
Stable Phase.
RED GIANT OR
SUPERGIANT
When the star runs out of hydrogen in its core,
STAR
it begins to expand and cool, turning into a red
giant and supergiant.
The core contracts and heats up causing fusion
to occur in shells around the core. The outer
layers expand and the star becomes much
larger and redder.
SUPERNOVA OR
PLANETARY
NEBULA
A star’s final phase depends
on its size.
• After helium fusion, the outer layer are ejected,
creating a colorful cloud of gas called
PLANETARY NEBULA. The core becomes a
White Dwarf.
• The stars explode in a supernova, releasing a
massive amount of energy. This leaves behind a
dense core that may become a Neutron Star or
even collapse into a Black Hole.
WHITE DWARF,
NEUTRON STAR, OR
BLACK HOLE
The remnant left after the
star has exploded or shed
its outer layers.
• WHITE DWARF- SMALL STARS

• NEUTRON STARS- LARGE STARS

• BLACK HOLE- VERY LARGE STARS
