Complex Machines
What is mean by
simple machines
• Simple machines are elementary examples of kinematic chains
that are used to model mechanical systems ranging from the
steam engine to robot manipulators. The bearings that form the
fulcrum of a lever and that allow the wheel and axle and pulleys
to rotate are examples of a kinematic pair called a hinged joint.
What is mean by
Complex Machines
• A complex machine is also known as a compound machine,
which consist of two or more simple machines, such as
levers, wedges, pulleys, screws, wheel and axle and inclined
planes. Some examples of complex machines are cars,
bicycles, can openers, a wheelbarrow, scissors and a stapler
LEVER
• Levers are simple machines that make work
easier; however, they do not change the amount
of work or energy needed to perform the task.
Therefore, the force must be applied over a
greater distance. A lever is a moveable bar that
pivots around a fixed point (fulcrum). Pliers are
one example of a lever.
INCLINED PLANE
An inclined plane is a flat surface that is tilted at an
angle, with one end higher than the other, used to
raise or lower loads. It is also known as a ramp.
PULLEY
A pulley is a mechanical device that uses a wheel
and a flexible rope, cable, belt, chain, or cord to lift
heavy objects and change the direction of force:
WHEEL AND AXLE
A wheel and axle is a simple machine that uses a
wheel and axle to transfer force and make work
easier:
SCREW
A screw is a fastener that's used to join objects
together by rotating it into a material:
WEDGE
A wedge is a simple machine that is thick at one
end and tapers to a thin edge at the other. It is used
for a variety of purposes, including:
