SOLID DOSAGE
FORMS
The solid dosage forms are the most used
dosage form because of the stability and ease
of mass production. These dosage forms are
mainly available in unit dosage forms but are
also available in bulk dosage forms.

POWDERS
TYPES OF SOLID DOSAGE FORMS

Unit dosage form Bulk dosage forms

1. Tablet 1. Fine powder and CAPSULES

2. Capsules granules
3. Pills 2. Dusting powders
4. Sachets 3. Insufflators TABLETS
5. Lozenges 4. Dentifrices PILLS
UNIT DOSAGE FORMS
1. TABLETS
• These are unit dosage forms consisting of
active ingredient and suitable
Pharmaceutical Excipients.
• Tablets may vary in size, shape, weight,
hardness thickness and in other aspects.

TYPES OF TABLETS:

1. Tablets for oral administration

2. Tablets for vaginal administration
3. Tablets for implantation
2. CAPSULES
• These are the unit dosage forms consisting of
gelatin shell that breaks often after the capsule
has been swallowed. These are of two types,

 Hard gelatin capsule- Two pieces fit together

and hold the drug, either powder or granular
form.
 Soft gelatin capsule- One piece with drug, which
is usually in liquid form inside the shell.

• Drugs are easily absorbed from these mixtures

offering two distinct advantages:
1. Quicker effect,
2. Drug absorbed more effectively, so lower doses
can be used.
3. PILLS:

Small rounded solid dosage form consisting medicament

intended for oral use. These are small spherical or ovoid
masses which are required to be made at dispensing
counters.

4. CACHETS:

Solid dosage forms. Drugs enclosed with wafer sheet of

rice.

BULK DOSAGE FORMS

POWDERS

These are the solid form of medicament used for internal and
external use. They are available in crystalline and
amorphous form.

1. FINE POWDER AND GRANULES-These are Finely

divided solid drugs or mixture of drugs for internal or
external use.

2. DENTRIFICES- It includes tooth powder, toothpaste,

which are used along with a toothbrush to clean and
polish natural teeth.
LIQUID DOSAGE FORMS

 The liquid form dosage of a

drug is for administration or
consumption.

 Route of administration may be

oral, intravenous, intramuscular,
cutaneous, subcutaneous, etc.

Liquid dosage forms are divided into

two parts according to the phase.
1. Monophasic liquid dosage form
2. Biphasic liquid dosage form.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

 Liquid dosage forms are flexible  It needs a lot of special storage

to take a proper those than solid
dose. conditions.
 The rate of absorption of the  Less stable than other doses.
liquid dosage form is so faster
than the solid dosage form.
SEMI-SOLID DOSAGE FORMS
Semi solid dosage forms are the tropical dosage form
used for the therapeutic, protective, or cosmetic
[Link] may be applied to the skin, nasal, vaginal,
or rectal cavity.
Ointments, pastes, cream, gels are the examples of
semi solid dosage forms.
ADVANATGES DISADVANTAGES
It is used externally. It may cause staining.
More stable than liquid dosage form. They are bulky to handle.
Suitable dosage form for bitter drugs. It may cause irritation or allergy to
some patients.
GASEOUS
DOSAGE FORM
GASEOUS DOSAGE FORMS
ARE PACKED IN A
CONTAINER WHICH GETS
RELEASED UPON APPLYING
PRESSURE. THE GAS
INSIDE CONTAINS
THERAPEUTICALLY ACTIVE
MEDICAMENTS.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
ADMINISTER EASILY AND QUICKLY. ONLY FEW DRUGS ARE USED.
ENHANCED STABILITY. NOT SUITABLE FOR IRRITANT DRUGS.
ADOSE CAN REMOVE WITHOUT
CONTAMINATION OF MATERIALS.
