What is an invitation?
An invitation is either a written or verbal piece
of information sent to someone special on the
occasions of marriage, birth celebrations, mass
gatherings on public events or functions etc.
An invitation can be a request, or an attempt to
get another person to join you at a specific
event. When you ask people to attend a party,
visit your house, or attend your marriage, you
invite them by giving them an invitation.
It can be in the form of an invitation card which is
generally considered as formal invitation or it may
be in the letter format which is more informal.
Types of Invitations

Features of a Formal invitation are as
follows:
It should be written in third person.
The presentation must be in a single sentence with
each entry in a separate line with proper alignment.
Standard expressions are used.
No punctuations are used at the end of lines.
Date, time and venue of the function are to be
mentioned and spell out all numbers or use Roman
numerals.
The abbreviation R.S.V.P. (meaning ‘please reply’) is
inserted at the bottom.
It should be in a box and within 50 words.
An Invitation should answer to the 5Ws:
WHAT- The occasion
WHEN- Date and time
WHERE- Venue
WHO- Name of the host
WHOM- Name of the person being invited

The format shall include-
Name of the host
Standard expression (E.g., request the pleasure of
your company, solicit your gracious presence)
Purpose of the invitation
Name of the honouree
Day, date and time of the event- Dates must be
written in letters and you should not use
abbreviation.
Name of the place, location with complete
address- Enter the address, the venue of the party
or event
RSVP
Telephone or mobile number or address of the
host

Features of an informal invitation are as
follow-
It is written to friends, relatives and
acquaintances.
There is no inside address or subject.
It is written in first/second person. Remember
to avoid using ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘they’.
The style and tone is relaxed and informal.
Different tenses are used as per the demand.
The salutation is ‘Dear and name of the
receiver.
The letter can be elaborative explaining the
details of the event.
Format of an informal invitation
SENDER’s ADDRESS- The sender’s address is usually put on the
top left-hand corner of the page.
DATE - The sender’s address is followed by the date of writing
the invitation in an expanded form just below it, i.e. on the left
side of the page.
RECEIVER’s ADDRESS
SALUTATIONS- This is where you greet the person you are
addressing the invitation to.

COMPLEMENTARY CLOSURE- Mention the name given in the
question paper. Do not mention your personal details.

HOME ASSIGNMENT
1. M/s Soni & Sons are opening a new general

a.m. Prepare a draft of formal invitation letter
for the purpose.
2. Your parents have completed 25 years of
happy married life. Invite your aunt, living in
Hyderabad, to join you in the Silver Jubilee
celebration of their marriage at your residence.
