What is caregiving?
• A caregiver is defined as a "person who
attends to the needs of a dependent
child or adult.”
• Caregivers manage the physical,
emotional, spiritual, and practical
needs of another person, all while
managing their own life, needs, family,
and career.

Why do elderly need care?
• Physiological reserve capacity (in terms of muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness,
skeletal integrity) of older people declines
• Reduction in reserve capacity

and environmental factors
What is Elder abuse?
• Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action,
occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust,
which causes harm or distress to an older person.
