Sewing is a skill that every member can learn

through constant practice.


Learning how to sew for the family is a fun
activity if you try to learn and take an interest
in it. Sewing is a fun hobby, but it can also be
a source of survival or a way to raise family
income.
In sewing, there are different tools and
materials to be used. We have measuring
tools, cutting tools, and sewing tools. These
tools and materials are classified according to
MEASURING TOOLS:
1. Tape measure – is made of cloth or plastic and
used for taking body measurements.

2. Ruler – is use to measure and draft lines on a


fabric or pattern.

3. Metal gauge – is use to measure short distances


and correct thickness, such as
distance between buttons, pleats,
and hems.
4. Hem gauge – is use to measure the
correct hem of the cloth.

5. French curve – is a tool use for


drafting curves in the
pattern of the arm,
neckline, and crotch.

6. Meter or Yard Stick – is use to


measure fabric.
7. Tailor’s Square – is use for correct
measurement of lines in
the right angle.

8. Curve Stick – is use to get accurate


lines in skirts.
CUTTING TOOLS:

1. Embroidery Scissors – are small scissors and


designed for needle work.

2. Dressmaking Shears – are big scissors and use for


cutting fabric.

3. Pinking Shears – are scissors with serrated blades or


zigzag edges used for cutting fabric
edge to prevent it from fraying and
traveling.
CUTTING TOOLS:

4. Light Trimmer – is use for small cutting, this tool has


one point blunts to prevent the fabric
from snagging.

5. Bent-handled Shears – are shears with straight


blades.

6. Sewing Scissors – is use for trimming seams and


facings.
CUTTING TOOLS:

7. Thread Clippers – are use for snipping thread.

8. Seam Ripper – is use to open seams as well as other


detailed work.

9. Stitch Ripper – is made of metal used to remove


stitches.
SEWING TOOLS:

1. Needles – have one sharp end and a hole on the other end to
make the thread pass through.

● Long darners- are long thick needles suitable for mending


holes in heavy fabric.
● Cotton darners (fine points) – are use for darning, suitable for
delicate yarns.
● Beading needles –are very long and fine with a sharp point.
● Curved needles – used in mattressing and upholstery works.
● Ball point needles (rounded point)– are used between knit
yarn fibers.
● Straws – are longer needles than between, used for
tacking.

● Tapestry needles– are strong thick needles, suitable for


working tapestry.

● Embroidery crewel needles– are sharp, medium length


needles with a long eye.

● Glover/Leather hand needles– are with round eyes and


triangular point, suitable for piercing both
leather and strong plastic fibers.
2. pins – are use to hold pieces of fabric

● Glass pins – are for easy handling


● Lace pins – are 1 inch long
● T-pins – stay in position open-
weave fabrics
● Safety pins
3. Pin Cushion –is made of
varied materials such
as cotton, use to keep
needles and pins when
unused.
4. Emery Bag – is similar to pin
cushion but with rougher
content, to sharpen the
tips of pins and needles
to prevent from rusting.
5. Thread – is use for stitching
clothes, comes in
different colors and
thickness.

6. Needle Threader – is use to


aid in inserting the
thread into the eye of
the needle.
7. Thimble – is a small,
durable, protective cap
made of metal or
plastic, used to protect
the finger from being
pricked when pushing
the needle through the
cloth.
