What is a Math Olympiad?

• A Math Olympiad is a competition where students solve challenging

math problems that test creativity, logic, and problem-solving skills. It
focuses on thinking outside the box rather than just doing routine
calculations.
Benefits of a Math Olympiad
• Boosts Critical Thinking: Develops reasoning and analytical skills.
• Builds Confidence: Helps students approach problems with curiosity
and resilience.
• Fosters a Love for Math: Encourages exploration beyond textbooks.
Basic Problem-Solving
Strategies
• Trial and Error
• Drawing Diagrams
• Break the Problem into Steps
Trial and error
•Try different possible solutions to find what works.
•Example: Solve ?+5=12 by testing numbers until the correct one is found.
( 1 + 5 = 6, which is not equal to 12.
2 + 5 = 7, which is not equal to 12…
and so on, until we reach 7+5 = 12)
Drawing Diagrams
•Visualize problems by sketching or creating diagrams.
•Example: If a problem involves 3 apples and 2 oranges, draw circles
to represent them for clarity.
Example question :
There are 18 people that like both tea and coffee, 21 people that like
tea and 27 people that like coffee. How many people are there?
Break the Problem into Steps

•Divide a complex question into smaller, manageable parts.

•Example: To calculate the total of 3 items costing $5, $8, and $12,
First solve 5+8=13, then 13+12=25.
Number patterns
Find the next term :
2,4,8,16…
3,9,27,81….
1,3,7,15,31…..
5,15,30,50,75…..
5,9,17,33,65….
91,89,85,77,61…..
1,1,2,3,5,8,13…..
More number patterns
Find the 7th term :
4,6,10,18,34….
10,12,14,16…..
2,5,9,14,20…..
10,5,15,10,20,15….
1,3,6,18,21,63,66….
Logical questions

as much as the apple. How much does each fruit weigh?

I am a 2-digit number above 50. The sum of my digits is 8, and the

difference between my digits is 2. What number am I?

Tom is twice as old as Jerry. The sum of their ages is 18. How old are
they?
More logical questions
Three numbers add up to 28. The first number is twice the second
number. The third number is 4 more than the second. What are the
numbers?

Sarah’s age is a two-digit number. The digits add up to 9. If you reverse

the digits, the new number is 27 less than Sarah’s age. How old is
Sarah?
