NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)

Non destructive testing ;is a group of techniques

used to evaluate the properties of materials
component or system without causing damage to
the original part of the observed specimen. It is a
crucial tool in various industries such as
manufacturing construction and aerospace to
ensure the quality and the safety products and
structure ; The following are the five common non
destructive testing methods
1. VISUAL INSPECTION (VT):this method
involves a visual examination of the weld surface
for defects like cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, and
undercut. This is the simplest and most common
method often used in conjunction with other NDT
methods since it only requires the examiner to
view the specimen by the use naked eyes and
simple tools.
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT):
A magnetic field is applied to the weld, and then
fine magnetic particles are applied to detects
surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic
materials (like steel).Defects cause magnetic field
distortions, attracting the particles and revealing
the defect in the specimen.
LIQUID PENETRANT INSPECTION (PT):
In this method liquid penetrant is applied to the weld surface,
filling the defects. It detects surface-opening defects in any
material. A developer is applied, drawing the penetrant out of
the defects, making them visible meaning that the liquid traces
the present cracks .
ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT):
A transducer emits sound waves into the weld, and the
reflected echoes are analyzed to identify defects present in the
observed specimen. Uses high-frequency sound waves to
detect internal defects like cracks, porosity, and lack of fusion.
RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT):
This method uses X-rays or gamma rays to create an
image of the weld's internal structure. Defects like cracks,
porosity, and lack of fusion appear as shadows on the
image that is due to the observed specimen.
