Study Strategy

IMS-Y7
what is a learning strategy?

A learning strategy is an individual’s way of

organizing and using a particular set of
skills in order to learn content or
accomplish other tasks more effectively
and efficiently in school as well as in non-
academic settings (Schumaker & Deshler,
1992)
INTRODUCTION

Learning strategy
instruction focuses on
strategies that facilitate
the active learning
process by teaching
students how to learn
and how to use what they

12 scientific strategies
to help students
increase learning
1. spaced repetition

To stop yourself
from forgetting
information,
study the same
material in
spaced intervals.
2. Read Aloud

read aloud will

increase your
reading
proficiency, and
increase
understanding of
content
3. Flash card

Flashcards use the

learning process “Active
Recall” where individuals
are given a question, and
then must figure out the
answers for yourselves.
4. Mnemonics

Mnemonic techniques will help

students both retain and retrieve
information through meaningful
and easy to remember
associations.
5. Exercises

research tells us that

aerobic exercise will
increase attention,
stimulate new neurons
and help in memorization
of new information.
6. Use the
Feynman
Technique
7. Mind Map

Students are able to visually

understand and group together
different components of
information, while being able to
conceptualize both larger and
smaller ideas.
8
.

Pictures and images are

dually encoded, generate
both visual and verbal
components, thus
providing an edge in
learning.
9. Meditate

? ? ? A recent study shows

that meditation can
increase your ability to
learn, study and respond
to feedback.
10. Teach the Content to others

? ? ? In order to be able to teach on

a topic, you must first have
mastery of that topic. Students
that tutor, will increase their
understanding.

studying a subject
right now that would
benefit from flash card
study as well, so it’d
be useful to learn the
best practices for
making and studying
those flash cards.

stand for?”, then you might run into a test question like:

• “What’s the chemical symbol for beryllium?’

make your own flashcard
Instructions
