Research Background
Recognizing the critical need for strong English language skills in today’s context of
increasing globalization, technological advancement, and a modernized labor market, recent
government policy has devoted attention to addressing persistent gaps in English education.
There are some issues regarding the students’ knowledge of English. Such as
- Unequal Student Outcomes
- Unequal Teacher Allocation
- Policy Implications
A very frequent issue that they faced was they weren’t able to convert simple present
sentences to simple past tense and when they wrote essays, some students couldn’t express
their ideas in the past tense. When I listed out the problems that occurred during the lessons, I
noticed that this one occurred many times more than the other problems.
Noticing that the classroom teaching that I did was not enough for those students to overcome
this past tense problem, I thought of launching research regarding this matter.
Problem Statement
Research Problem: Confusions regarding irregular and regular verbs.
According to my day notes, and my observation, I identified a few
students of my grade 6 classes.
Here my aim is to find answers/solutions to the above-mentioned problem
through carrying out a research.
Objectives
Main Objective
- To improve selected students’ knowledge about irregular and regular
verbs.
General Objective
- Improving the knowledge of regular & irregular verbs by using creative
activities
Specific Objectives
- To minimize students’ grammar errors in writing.
- To improve students’ basic knowledge in grammar.
- To use regular and irregular verbs correctly in speaking and writing.
- To form and use the past tense of frequently occur
- To improve the knowledge on verbs used in simple past tense
- To uplift the student’s confidence in using correct grammar.
Sampling Plan
Both Probability Sampling and Non-Probability Sampling methods will be used. Firstly, around 20 students out of
the 55 students in the class of Ananda College, Colombo 10, will be selected under Convenience sampling, Then
from each class 5-8 students were selected through Convenience Sampling. Class groups were selected through a
combination of Purposive Sampling and Random Sampling
Finding basic data related to the problem
Interview
I considered interviews as an effective method that I can use to gather information about the selected four
students. I interviewed the class teacher and the English teacher of those students’ previous grades. I had some
pre-planned questions for both the teachers.
Observation
I always used the indirect observation method in observing the students since I found it more convenient in
collecting the data that I looked for. I used a checklist to note down the data that I gathered from observing the
students. By observing the students, I could confirm that they weren’t clarifying the difference between simple
present tense verbs and simple past tense verbs.
Tests
Conducting tests to check students' improvements from time to time.

Methodology
The design of the experimental method in this research used a pre-experimental method. I
one design of the pre-experimental method, that is the pre-test and post-test one group
design. This was researched by comparing the students’ achievement before treatment and
after treatment.
