What is Communication?

The English word ‘communication’ is derived from the Latin communis, which means
common sense. The word communication means sharing the same ideas. In other words,
the transmission and interaction of facts, ideas, opinions, feelings or attitudes.
Communication is the essence of management. The basic function of management
(planning, planning, staffing, supervision and management) cannot be done effectively
without effective communication.
Communication is a two-way process which involves transferring of information or
messages from one person or group to another. This process goes on and includes a
minimum of one sender and receiver to pass on the messages. These messages can
either be any ideas, imagination, emotions, or thoughts.
Communication is a Latin word which means “to share”. There are different modes of
communication available today. These include emails, chats, WhatsApp, skype
(conference calls), etc. Effective communication makes people’s work easier and
smooth.

The 7C’s of Communication are a set of principles that guide
effective communication. They include:
1. Clarity
Clarity is the first and most crucial aspect of effective communication.
Your message should be clear and easy to understand, leaving no
room for confusion or misunderstanding. To achieve clarity, use
simple and concise language, avoid jargon or technical terms, and
organize your thoughts in a logical manner.
2. Completeness
Completeness means ensuring that your message is complete,
including all the necessary information required for the recipient to
understand and act on it. To achieve completeness, answer all
questions that the recipient may have and provide any additional
information that may be required.
3. Conciseness
Conciseness means conveying your message in the fewest possible
words without sacrificing clarity or completeness. To achieve
conciseness, use short and straightforward sentences, avoid

Correctness means ensuring that your message is accurate, error-free, and
grammatically correct. To achieve correctness, proofread your message, use
appropriate grammar and spelling, and verify any facts or figures included in your
message.
5. Courtesy
Courtesy means conveying your message with respect, empathy, and sensitivity.
To achieve courtesy, use polite language, avoid offensive or insensitive language,
and acknowledge the recipient’s perspective and feelings.
6. Consideration
Consideration means understanding the recipient’s needs, interests, and
preferences and tailoring your message accordingly. To achieve consideration, put
yourself in the recipient’s shoes, and think about how your message may impact
them.
7. Concrete
Concrete means using specific and tangible language to convey your message. To
achieve concreteness, use real examples, statistics, and facts to support your
message, making it more tangible and easier to understand.
Barriers in communication
Communication barriers are obstacles that can make it difficult to communicate effectively
with another person. Some common types of communication barriers include:
 Language barriers
Also known as semantic barriers, these occur when the receiver doesn't clearly understand
the message.
 Cultural barriers.
To be accepted as a member of a group, people may adopt behaviors that the group
perceives as a sign of belonging..
 Physical barriers
These can prevent someone from interpreting non-verbal cues, especially in communication
methods that rely on technology.
 Psychological barriers
These include mental and psychological issues like stage fear, speech
disorders, phobia, or depression.
 Emotional barriers
These are mental blocks that can influence how someone perceives
others' actions.
 Physiological barriers..
These arise when someone is unable to express or receive a message
clearly due to physiological issues like dyslexia or nerve disorders. .
 Interpersonal barriers
These are negative patterns of behavior that can hinder communication
or discourage others from communicating

hard to focus on important messages.
 Misinterpretation: Tone and intent may be
misunderstood due to lack of non-verbal cues like
gestures or expressions.

platform glitches disrupt communication.
 Credibility Issues: Difficulty in identifying the
authenticity of messages or sources.
 Echo Chambers: Social media algorithms reinforce
existing beliefs, limiting exposure to diverse
perspectives
 Privacy Concerns: Fear of personal data misuse
discourages open sharing of information.

The 7 C of communication provides a comprehensive framework


for improving communication effectiveness and impact. By
incorporating principles such as clarity, coherence, and
conciseness into their communication practices, individuals can
enhance their ability to convey messages successfully across
diverse audiences and contexts. Whether in professional settings,
educational environments, or personal interactions, mastering
the 7 C's can lead to clearer, more compelling communication
outcomes that foster understanding, engagement, and positive
