• 2nd largest continent after Asia
• Separated from Asia by the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Suez,
and the Red Sea
• Separated from Europe by the strait of Gibraltar and
Mediterranean Sea
• Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and Indian
Ocean on the east
• Origin of mankind—earliest protohuman fossils were
found in Africa
• Lake Victoria—the largest African great lake

• Nile River is found in Africa shared by Uganda, Kenya, and
Tanzania
• Africa was discovered by Prince Henry—a Portuguese explore
• Africa has 54 countries---the largest is Algeria, next is Congo
and 3rd is Sudan.

• Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa located in
Tanzania; has 3 volcanic cones---Kibo, Mawenzi, Shira. Uhuru
Peak or Kibo is the mountain’s highest peak
• 2nd highest mountain peak is Mt. Kenya.

• Oral and written
• Oral tradition is rich in folktales, myths, riddles, and proverbs,
that serve a religious, social, and educational functions.
• No ancient traditions of written literature
• Christian missionaries introduced religious writings
• Written either in African or foreign languages
• “EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD”-- is the earliest record of
literature written down in papyrus in 250 BC.
