FRAMO PUMPS
MANUFACTURER
FRANK MOHN
COMPANY.
BY C/E NARESH SHARMA
Advantages of using FRAMO
pumping system
No explosion danger.
Increased cargo carrying capacity –
no pump room so no hazards environment,
reduced steel.
No suction lines inside tanks –
no suction loss,
better stripping with less amount of slop
left,
easy cleaning.
All cargo piping on-deck-
reduced piping by amount & size,
easy care of valves & piping.
Efficient heating and reduced steam
consumption due to possibility of deck
mounted cargo heaters.

High flexibility
one power station for many consumers
i.e. bow thruster, deck crane, ballast
pumps, winches.
Less ballast piping
(submerged hydraulic - driven ballast
pumps).
Bow thruster
Hydraulic motor can be located in
hazardous area.
Hydraulic motor- step less speed control
replaces variable pitch control.
Offers full cargo segregation.
Increased discharge capacity at lower
terminal heads
(shorter discharge time and more cargo
carrying days).
Pentagon Maritime Training & Research Institute
Step less capacity and speed control of
cargo pumps.
Optimal power consumption
(regardless of terminal head, cargo
viscosity or specific gravity).
Easy cargo pump maintenance as,
all service points located at the pump
head,
pump can be serviced inside the tank, no
need to pull out,
Pump – advantages;
- All moving parts lubricated by the
hydraulic oil.
- No ventilation - produced heat
returns
to the cooler.
- Small dimensions -low weight.
- High efficiency.
- Cargo pump design for spec. gravity
1.0, able to pump cargo with spec.
gravity of 2.0.

Reduced yard installation time due to;
a) less piping,
b) no piping penetration b/w
cargo tanks,
c) all equipment located on deck,
d) quicker and high quality coating of
cargo tanks
Technical support and world-wide
service of Framo.

Hydraulic system: a close loop system.
Speed control valve:
to avoid over speeding of pumps when
pressure in system is more,
to be locally controlled for stripping &
topping up,
Feed pumps:
Serves to fill the system initially,
One pump shall run all the time at low
capacity mode (6-7 bar),
two during cargo operation at high
capacity mode (min. pr. 50-60bar),
third pump comes on load with in 3
sec. of any one pp failure,
if not L.P. trip gets activated (40 bar).
The system kept pressurized to
prevent oil – cargo contamination and
air getting in to system.

Checks before starting main power
pack
• cooling pump for hydraulic oil cooler -
running.
• cooling fan for power packs - running.
• necessary numbers of generators -
running.
• potentiometer for system pressure - at
minimum position.
• speed control valve for all consumers -
in closed position.
• cargo pump’s cofferdam - purged.

Power pack:
Not to be started if only one feed pump
is running or the system pressure is
below 50 bar.
Prior start & stop pressure to be
reduced to 60 bar to avoid pressure
surge.
Diesel pw/pk to be started from E/R
and stopped from CCR.
60 bar system ensures good
lubrication.
Pentagon Maritime Training & Research Institute
Temp. cont.; 500 C - 300 C.
In flushing mode; 500 C - 580 C.
Restarting of power pack be limited to
4 in 1 hr. at an interval of 15 mints.
System hydraulic pressure,
max. 20 bar more then the highest
consumer pressure, more is waste of
energy.
Speed is controlled by flow not by
pressure.

PURGING
Place a suitable container underneath
the exhaust trap to collect leakage.
Check that the drain valve at the bottom
of the trap is not blocked.
Drain the purging media line for
condensed water.
Connect purging hose.
Start purging and take precaution as
purging media or liquid may splash.
Pentagon Maritime Training & Research Institute
WHEN TO PURGE
Before Loading.
1-2 days after loading, if no leak found
then purge at an interval of 7-10 days. If
leakage found then purge daily.
If pump is used for internal transfer of
cargo during the voyage then purge
before and after use.
Before starting unloading process.
After discharge of cargo.
Pentagon Maritime Training & Research Institute
EVALUATION OF PURGING
0.5 liters per day is normal.
if more, to be purged 2-3 times per day.
Pump to be repaired at first opportunity.
In case hydraulic oil 0.25 liters per day is
considered controlled leak,
but as it increases the purging has to be
increased and then repair is to be
planned.
In case the cofferdam is found blocked it
is not recommended to use the pump.

SYSTEM SHUT DOWN
The following conditions will lead to
system shut down:
Low- low oil level in tank
Closed valve in return line
Low feed pressure
Feed Pump Failure
