Module 0: Course Outline

Course Objectives:

The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the power

system stability problems including rotor dynamics and the swing
equation, power-angle equation, equal area criteria of stability, multi
machines stability limits.
Module 0: Course Outline

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Having successfully completed the course, students should be able to:

 Analyze and design real power and frequency control

 Analyze and design reactive power and voltage control
 Perform operation and control of electric power system
 Analyze transient stability
 Apply the knowledge of stability control to improve the operating
characteristics of existing power systems
Module 0: Course Outline
Organization:
This course consists of 3 hours scheduled lecture and tutorial on Friday (Room:
A309) per week for 15 weeks.

Tutorials
A set of numerical exercises on different topics will be given, and students are
required to work on the exercises. The instructor will discuss with students the
problematic parts during the tutorial sessions

Modelling Assignments
During lectures and tutorial sessions, modelling assignments will be introduced
Students will be required to have latest Matlab and Power Word software installed
in their computers
Module 0: Course Outline
Examinations
Examinations are based on a traditional closed book.
CA (40%) will be distributed into 2 tests (30%) each contributing 15% and 1
modelling assignment contributing 10%
At the end of the semester, you will sit for the University Examination (60%)

Course Material
Lecture handouts. Lectures are mainly based on several textbooks:

1. P. Kundur, “Power System Stability and Control”, EPRI Power System

Engineering Series, MacGraw-Hill Inc., 1994. Very extensive book. Highly
recommended.
2. Leonard L. Grigsby (editor), “Power System Stability and Control”, CRC Press,
2007.
3. T.V. Cutsem and C. Vournas, “Voltage Stability of Electric Power Systems”,
Springer, 1998.
4. H. Saadat, “Power System Analysis”, Second Edition, Mc Graw Hill, 2002.
5. J.D. Glover and M.S. Sarma, “Power System Analysis and Design”, Third
Edition, Brooks/Cole, 2002.
