The OSI
Model: How
the Internet
Talks
Breaking Down the 7 Layers of
Network Communication
~ Rohin Mahajan
What is the OSI
Model?
• The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a
conceptual framework that breaks down how data
travels from one computer to another. Think of it as a
seven-step journey, with each step having its own role
in getting data from sender to receiver. It helps make
network communication consistent and compatible
across devices.

Why
Should
You Care?
• The OSI Model matters
because it’s like a universal
language that allows different
networking systems to
communicate. It standardizes
how data is sent and received,
which helps solve problems
more easily and keeps devices
compatible across different
manufacturers
Layer 1:
Physical Layer –
The Hardware
• The Physical Layer is all about the
physical connections. It deals with
cables, routers, switches, and Wi-Fi
signals. At this layer, data is just a
series of 1s and 0s that travel across
wires or radio waves. Think of it as the
'delivery trucks' that carry the data to
its destination

Layer 2: Data
Link Layer- Error
Detection
• The Data Link Layer acts like a traffic
cop, managing who gets to send data
and when. It also checks for errors to
make sure the data arrives without any
mix ups. Think of this layer as quality
control, making sure the data packets
reach the next stop intact.

Layer 3: Network
Layer- Finding the
Way
• This is where data finds the best
route to its destination. The Network
Layer uses IP addresses to decide
where data should go, like a GPS
directing the data through various
paths. It’s crucial for directing data on
large networks like the internet

Layer 4: Transport
Layer- Keeping
Data Intact
• The Transport Layer makes sure that
data arrives without errors and in the
right order. It’s like a diligent courier,
ensuring all parts of the message
reach their destination without missing
a piece. Protocols like TCP
(Transmission Control Protocol) operate
here to maintain reliability

Layer 5: Session
Layer – Keeping
Track
• The Session Layer handles the
'conversation' between devices,
ensuring the connection stays open
until the data transfer is complete.
Imagine it as the person who manages
a meeting, keeping things organized
and focused

Layer 6:
Presentation Layer
–Translating Data
This layer translates the data into a
format the receiving system can
understand. It also encrypts and
compresses data as needed. Think of it
as the interpreter that ensures both
devices speak the same language

Layer 7: Application
Layer – The Interface
•The Application Layer is the closest to
the end user. It’s where apps like web
browsers and email clients interact
with the OSI Model. Think of it as the
front door where data enters and exits,
connecting the user with the network.

Summary
The OSI Model is a critical concept that
breaks down how data moves from one
device to another across a network.
Each of the 7 layers plays a unique role
in this journey. Feel free to ask questions
about any layer, or the OSI model as a
whole
