Chapter 6.

Different between Atoms, Molecules, Compounds and Mixtures
What is element?

Element is a substance made up of only one kind of atom

( all atoms are identical)
What is compound
A compound is a substance that is made up of atoms of elements joined to atoms
of other elements.

How can compounds be formed?.

Compounds form from elements through chemical reactions, where atoms
combine by sharing or transferring electrons.
Compounds

• Form when two or more different elements join (bond) together chemically
• Composition is identical in each sample
• Can be separated only by chemical methods
• Properties of a compound are totally different than the properties of the elements that
form them
• Examples: Water, Carbon dioxide, Sugar
There is a key difference between elements and compounds.
• Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means,
but elements cannot.
Distinguishing Elements and Compounds

 When the elements sodium and chlorine combine chemically to

form sodium chloride, there is a change in composition and a
change in properties.

• Sodium is a shiny, soft gray metal and fizzes

in water.
• Chlorine is a pale yellow or green, smelly,
poisonous gas.

•Sodium chloride (commonly known as table salt) is a white solid.

Properties of Compounds

1. It is a pure substance.
2. It can not be separated by a physical method.
3. Element loses their properties in a compound.
4. Its composition is fixed throughout its mass.
5. It has a fixed melting point.
