BATCH CODE : 58-PJ201MA (2024)

Subject Name – Chemistry

Chapter Name – Liquid Solution

Lecture No.- 01 By- Vishal Singh

Today's Goal

Topic Solutions and their types

Topic Solubility of solid in liquid

Topic Solubility of gas in liquid (Henry’s law)

INTRODUCTION

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances which are chemically

non-reacting. We come across many types of solutions in our daily life. e.g., solid-liquid,
liquid-liquid, gas-gas. In this chapter we will learn several properties of solutions and
their applications.
Topic : Binary Solution
Topic : Solute & Solvent
Topic : Type of Solution

Types of Solutions Solute Solvent Examples

Gas Gas Mixture of oxygen & Nitrogen gases
Gaseous Solution Liquid Gas Chloroform with Nitrogen
Solid Gas Camphor in nitrogen Gas
Gas Liquid Oxygen Dissolved in water
Liquid Solution Liquid Liquid Ethanol dissolved in water
Solid Liquid Glucose dissolved in water
Gas Solid Solution of Hydrogen in Palladium
Solid Solution Liquid Solid Amalgam of mercury with Sodium
Solid Solid Copper dissolved in gold
Topic : Solubility

Solubility: The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of
solvent at a given temperature. The maximum amount of a substance that can be
dissolved in 100 grams of water at a given temperature is called its Solubility in water.
Topic : Solubility of Solid in Liquid
Topic : Dissolution and Crystallization
Topic : Effect of Temperature & Pressure on Solubility
Question

#Q. If we increase the temperature than what will be the effect on

solubility of solid in liquid.
Topic : Solubility of Gas in a Liquid

Fig. : Effect of pressure on the solubility of a gas. The concentration of dissolved gas is
proportional to the pressure on the gas above the solution.
Topic : Effect of temperature on solubility of gas in liquid
Question

#Q. On dissolving sugar in water at room temperature solution feels

cool to touch.
Under which of the following cases dissolution of sugar will be
most rapid?

A Sugar crystal in cold water

B Sugar crystal in hot water

C Powdered crystal in cold water

D Powdered crystal in hot water

Topic : Effect of Pressure (Henry’s LAW)

The partial pressure of the gas in vapour phase (p) is proportional to the mole fraction
of the gas (x) in the solution and is expressed as:

p = KH x

Here KH is the Henry’s law constant

Topic : Characteristics of KH

 Higher the KH, lower will be the solubility.

 Its value depends on nature of gas.
 More the temperature, more will be the KH.
Topic : Limitation & Application of Henry’s law

 Henry's law is applicable at moderate temperature and pressure only.

 Only the less soluble gases obeys Henry's law.
 The gases reacting with the solvent do not obey Henry's law
 The gases obeying Henry's law should not associate or dissociate while dissolving
in the solvent.
Question #ImpQ.

#Q. If we Increase the temperature than what will be the effect on

solubility of gas in liquid?
[NCERT]
Question #ImpQ.

#Q. if temperature is increased then what will the effect on Henry

law const KH of gas.
Question #ImpQ.

#Q. If value of KH increases than what will be effect on solubility of

gas.
Question #ImpQ.

#Q. What is ‘anoxia’’?

Question #ImpQ.

#Q. Why soft drinks or soda water bottle is sealed under high
pressure?
Question #ImpQ.

#Q. What is unit of Henry’s law constant KH?

Question #ImpQ.

If N2 gas is bubbled through water at 293 K, how many millimoles of

N2 gas would dissolve in 1 litre of water? Assume that N2 exerts a
partial pressure of 0.987 bar. Given that Henry’s law constant for N2
[NCERT]
at 293 K is 76.48 kbar.
Topic : Only One Correct Option

The Henry’s law constant for the solubility of N2 gas in water at 298
K is 1.0 × 105 atm. The mole fraction of N2 in air is 0.8. The number
of moles of N2 from air dissolved in 10 moles of water of 298 K and
5 atm pressure is:
A 4.0  104

B 4.0  105

C 5.0  104

D 4.0  106
