Gary, who was 20 years old at
that time, wears a hooded
sweatshirt and made his way
to the barn. While watering
the calves, he accidentally
splashed some water on his
sweatshirt.
He proceeded to transport
manure up to the nearby field
to be planted with vegetables.
His father had just fixed the
manure spreader the week
before and forgot to put the
shield back on the shaft. In a
matter of seconds, Gary’s wet
sweatshirt got caught in the cold
steel, ripping his clothes off.
He was all alone, wearing nothing
but barn boots. The field was
located on a hill above his house,
about 2kms away from the nearest
neighborhood. His collar had
become caught and was now
wrapped around the power- take
off shaft and his arm.
Gary tried and tried to tear the
shirt, but to no avail. He had
no choice but to watch as the
shirt became tighter and
tighter. It was choking him and
ultimately his arm was pinch
off and leaving a deep cut.
Just so timely before it
dislocated his elbow, a
neighbor came. Gary
instructed him to shut the
spreader off. Gary was found
bleeding with a deep wound
on his right arm.

It is important to recognize and
disseminate correct information on
giving first aid. Make a 3.5’’ x 8.5‘’
flyer (3/4 of a short size bond paper/
colored paper) on first aid for any
selected farm injury. Any available art
materials at home may be used. You
will be rated trough a scoring rubric.
