Introduction to the Culture Industry
The term culture industry (German: Kulturindustrie ) was created by the critical
theorists Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) and Max Horkheimer (1895-1973), and
was presented as critical vocabulary in the chapter "The Culture Industry:
Enlightenment as Mass Deception" of the book Dialectic of Enlightenment
(1947), wherein they proposed that popular culture is akin to a factory
producing standardized cultural goods films, radio programs, magazines, etc ,
that are used to Consumption of the simple pleasures of popular culture, made
available by mass communication media, renders individuals submissive and
satisfied, regardless of their economic situation.
Why the Culture Industry Matters
Economic development
Cultural industries can contribute to economic development by creating value,
generating employment, and increasing regional economic development.
Research
The cultural industries are a popular area of research, especially in economic
geography. Research in this area can help us understand the relationship between
cultural and economic activities, and how these activities are perceived by
musicians, venue managers, and agents.
Popular culture
Popular culture includes many consumer products, such as soft drinks and
jeans. Some theorists argue that all contemporary purchasing is part of the cultural
realm.
The term "culture industry" was coined by German scholars Theodor Adorno and
Max Horkheimer. They argued that the culture industry negatively impacts society
by creating products that are mass-produced and designed to entertain and
manipulate people. Adorno and Horkheimer believed that the culture industry strips
art of its autonomy, which separates people from real culture and thought.
