INTRODUCTION
 Ishim River is located in Kazakhstan
and Russia.
 Its total length is 1,522 miles (2,450 km)
 Catchment area of Ishim river is Irtysh.
It is 2,450 kilometers long.
 The mouth of Ishim is located on the left
bank of the Irtysh, at its 1016 kilometer.
 Ishim River, encompasses through :
 Kazakhstan
 Nur-Sultan (Astana), Akmola Region,
North Kazakhstan Region.
 Russia
 Omsk Oblast

ANNUAL DISCHARGE OF ISHIM RIVER

 The Ishim River has a relatively

low annual discharge compared
to other large rivers. Its average
annual discharge is about 56
cubic meters per second (m³/s)
near the city of Petropavl in
northern Kazakhstan.
 This graph shows highest
discharge in June and July
(around 100 m³/s) and lowest in
February and march (around 20
m³/s) 3
GEO-ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES OF ISHIM RIVERS

 The Ishim River faces several geo-environmental challenges, primarily related to water
pollution and the effects of anthropogenic activities.

 Water Pollution:

 Industrial waste, particularly from the Karaganda-Temirtau industrial region, contributes

significant pollution to the river, introducing heavy metals, organic compounds, and other
harmful substances. This has resulted in deterioration of water quality, with indicators such as
ion concentrations and biogenic elements often exceeding acceptable limits. This pollution
impacts aquatic ecosystems, especially in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan

 Changes in Water Flow:

 Human activities, such as building dams and using water for farming, have changed the river's
natural flow. These changes disturb the river's ecosystem and reduce the number of important
organisms like zooplankton, which help maintain water quality

 Nutrient Overload (Eutrophication):

 Fertilizers from farms flow into the river, causing too much algae to grow. This reduces oxygen
in the water, which is harmful to fish and other water creatures

CONCLUSION

 The Ishim River flows through Kazakhstan and Russia, stretching

for 1,522 miles (2,450 km). It connects to the Irtysh River, with its
mouth located at the 1,016 km point on the left bank. The river passes
through important regions like Nur-Sultan (Astana), Akmola, North
Kazakhstan, and the Omsk Oblast in Russia. Its water flow is
relatively low, averaging 56 cubic meters per second (m³/s) near
Petropavl. However, the river faces serious environmental problems,
including pollution from industrial waste, changes in its natural flow
due to dams and farming, and nutrient overload from fertilizers, which
harms aquatic life.
