DATA
INTERPRETATION
INTRODUCTION:
Data Interpretation is the process of making sense
out of a collection of data that has been processed.
This collection may be present in various forms
like pie charts, bar graphs, line charts and tabular
forms and other similar forms.
BAR GRAPH:
A bar graph is a pictorial representation of
data in the form of bars or buildings on a
graph.
[Link] of the given years, in how many did the
export was more than 10% as compared to the
import?
A. 1 B. 2
C. 3 D. 4
EXPLANATION:
In the year 2000, exports were 60 while the imports were 50.
So 10% of 50 is 5. And thus the total will be 55. Here 60 > 55.
Similarly in 2001, 110 = 10% of 100.
In 2002, 120 < 130. For 2003, 120 > 10% of 100. For 2004,
150 < 10 % of 140.
In 2005, 190 < 10 % of 180. So there are years i.e. 2000 and
2003 where exports were 10 % greater than the imports. So the
correct answer is B
[Link] all the years mentioned what is the average
of the exports?
A. 110 B. 120
C. 116 D. 130
EXPLANATION:
Here from the figure the average of the
exports will be: (60 + 110 + 120 + 120 + 150
+ 140)/ 6 = 116. So the correct answer is C
3. What is the ratio of the total import of all years
to the total export of all years?
A. 1 : 2 B. 2 : 3
C. 1 : 1 D. 1 : 3
EXPLANATION:
Here from the figure of the exports will be: (60 + 110 +
120 + 120 + 150 + 140) = 700.
Here from the figure of the exports will be: (50 + 100 +
130 + 100 + 140 + 180) = 700.
So the correct answer is C

= 11.84%
PIE CHART:
The following pie-chart shows the percentage distribution of the expenditure
incurred in publishing a book. Study the pie-chart and the answer the questions
based on it.
Various Expenditures (in percentage) Incurred in Publishing a Book
1. If for a certain quantity of books, the publisher has to pay Rs. 30,600
as printing cost, then what will be amount of royalty to be paid for
these books?
A. 19450 B. 21200 C. 22950 D. 26150
EXPLANATION:
Let the amount of Royalty to be paid for these books be Rs. r.
Then, 20% = 30600
15% = ?
= ( 30600 x 15 ) / 20
= Rs. 22950.
2. What is the central angle of the sector corresponding to the
expenditure incurred on Royalty?
A. 15 B. 24 C. 54 D. 48
EXPLANATION:
Central angle corresponding to Royalty = (15% of 360)
= 15 / 100 * 360
= 54 degree
3. If for a certain quantity of books, the publisher has to pay Rs. 22,950
as royalty, then what will be amount of binding to be paid for these
books?
A. 19450 B. 21200 C. 30600 D. 26150
EXPLANATION:
Let the amount of Binding to be paid for these books be Rs. r.
Then, 15% = 22950
20% = ?
= ( 22950 x 20 ) / 15
= Rs. 30600.
4. What is the ratio of printing cost expenditure incurred in publishing a
book to the paper cost expenditure incurred in publishing a book?
A. 1 : 2 B. 4 : 5
C. 5 : 4 D. 1 : 3
EXPLANATION:
Printing cost expenditure incurred in publishing a book = 20%
Paper cost expenditure incurred in publishing a book = 25%
20% : 25% = 4 : 5
LINE CHART:
Study the following line graph and answer the questions based on it.
Number of Vehicles Manufactured by Two companies over the Years
(Number in Thousands)
1. What is the difference between the number of vehicles manufactured
by Company Y in 2000 and 2001 ?
A. 50000 B. 42000 C. 33000 D. 21000
EXPLANATION:
Required difference = (128000 - 107000) = 21000
2. What is the difference between the total productions of the two
Companies in the given(all) years ?
A. 62000 B. 19000 C. 26000 D. 21000
EXPLANATION:
From the line-graph it is clear that the productions of Company X in the
years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 are 119000, 99000, 141000,
78000, 120000 and 159000 and those of Company Y are 139000,
120000,100000, 128000, 107000 and 148000 respectively.
Total production of Company X from 1997 to 2002
= 119000 + 99000 + 141000 + 78000 + 120000 + 159000
= 716000.
and total production of Company Y from 1997 to 2002
= 139000 + 120000 + 100000 + 128000 + 107000 + 148000
= 742000.
Difference = (742000 - 716000) = 26000.
3. What is the average numbers of vehicles manufactured by Company
X over the given period ? (rounded off to nearest integer)
A. 119333 B. 113666 C. 112777 D. 114888
EXPLANATION:
Average number of vehicles manufactured by Company X
= 1/6 * (119000 + 99000 + 141000 + 78000 + 120000 + 159000)
= 119333.
4. In which of the following years, the difference between the
productions of Companies X and Y was the maximum among the given
years ?
A. 1997 B. 1998 C. 1999 D. 2000
EXPLANATION:
The difference between the productions of Companies X and Y in
various years are:
For 1997 (139000 - 119000) = 20000.
For 1998 (120000 - 99000) = 21000.
For 1999 (141000 - 100000) = 41000.
For 2000 (128000 - 78000) = 50000.
For 2001 (120000 - 107000) = 13000.
For 2002 (159000 - 148000) = 11000.
Clearly, maximum difference was in 2000.
5. The production of Company Y in 2000 was approximately what
percent of the production of Company X in the same year ?
A. 172 B. 164 C. 116 D. 130
EXPLANATION:
Required percentage = ( 128000 / 78000) * 100
= 164%
