 ARCHITECTURAL
CHARACTERISTICS
• Domes – interiors were often painted with a sky filled with angels and sculpted sunbeams
• Quadratura – illusionistic ceiling paintings
• Grand Stairways – often occupied a central place and used for dramatic effect
• Cartouche – oval or oblong design with a slightly convex surface, typically edged with ornamental scrollwork
• Mirrors – to give impression of depth and greater space
• Incomplete Architectural Elements – pediments with sections missing, causing sections to merge and
disorienting the eye
• Chiarascoru – strong contrast of darkness and light for dramatic effect
• Overhead Sculpture – made of wood, plaster, stucco, marble giving the illusion of floating in the air
• Solomonic Columns – spiraling twisting shaft like a corkscrew, which gave an illusion of motion. Also known as
Barley-sugar column.
• Elliptical or Oval Spaces – eliminating right angles

BAROQUE & ROCOCO
• Partial abandonment of symmetry, everything being composed of graceful lines and curves, similar to Art
Nouveau

• The huge quantity of asymmetrical curves and C-shaped volutes

• The wide use of flowers in ornamentation, an example being festoons made of flowers

• Sometimes using East Asian motifs

• Warm pastel colors
