Definition of Ethics
• Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with questions about
what is morally right and wrong, good and bad, just and unjust. It
encompasses a wide range of theories and principles guiding human
behavior.
Types of Ethics
• Normative ethics
Normative ethics is the branch of ethics that focuses on establishing
rules or standards for how people should act. It answers questions like
"What is the right thing to do?" or "How should we behave?" It involves
creating guidelines for moral behavior, helping us determine what is
considered good or bad in different situations. Essentially, it’s about finding
out the best ways to live and make choices based on moral principles.
Descriptive Ethics
• Descriptive Ethics: Studies and describes people's
beliefs about morality. It examines how different
cultures and societies perceive ethical issues and moral
values.
Applied Ethics
Involves applying ethical theories to specific real-world
situations. Common fields include:
•Medical Ethics: Addresses ethical dilemmas in healthcare,
such as patient rights and medical decision-making.
•Business Ethics: Examines ethical issues in business practices,
including corporate governance and social responsibility.
•Environmental Ethics: Considers moral responsibilities
toward the environment and the ethical implications of
ecological issues.
Meta-Ethics
• Meta-Ethics: Explores the nature and meaning of ethical
concepts. It addresses questions such as:
• What do terms like "good" and "bad" mean?
• Are moral values objective or subjective?
• How do we know what is right or wrong
