HI
ABOUT
HIM
Genichi Taguchi, born in 1924 in Takamachi,
Japan, is renowned for the "Taguchi
Methods," which focus on enhancing quality
and reducing costs through experimental
design and quality control.
EARLY
EDUCATION:
Textile Engineering:
Taguchi initially studied textile engineering at Kiryu
Technical College with the intent of joining his family's
kimono business.
Military Service:
In 1942, he was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Navy,
which interrupted his studies.
Post-War Education and Career:
After World War II, in 1948, he began working at the Ministry
of Public Health and Welfare and the Institute of Statistical
Mathematics, where he honed his statistical skills under the
mentorship of Matosaburo Masuyama.
EARLY
EDUCATION:
He earned his Ph.D. in Statistics and Mathematics
Science from Kyushu University in 1962.
Academic Contributions:
In 1965, Taguchi became a professor at Aoyama
Gakuin University, where he significantly contributed
to developing the university's engineering program.
LEGACY
• One of Taguchi’s valuable contributions is “robust design”
and the method of achieving it, which is called “parameter
design.”
• Taguchi’s contributions in helping engineers realize the
need to minimize variance, and produce designs that are
not sensitive to the operating environment and are not
harmed by variation in the components.
• Another of Taguchi’s contributions to the field of quality is
his loss function.
AWARDS
• Indigo Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan
(1989)
• Willard F. Rockwell Medal of the International
Technology Institute (1986)
• National Medal of Technology
(1992)
• Deming Prize for Individuals

QUALITY CONCEPTS
• Quality Improvement should focus in reducing the variation
of the products key performance characteristics about the
target values.
• The loss suffered by a customer due to a product's
performance variation is often just about the proportional to
the square of the deviation of the performance
characteristics from it's target value.
• The ultimate quality product and cost of manufactured
products.
• A product or process performance variation can be lessened.
• Statistically planed experiments can be used to name the
setting and product.
TAGUCHI'S
EIGHT-POINT
APPROACH
1. Determine the main functions, side eff ects and loss models.
2. Determine the noise factors and the testing conditions for evaluating failure of quality.
3. Determine the quality characteristics to be observed and the objective function to be
optimized.
4. Determine the control factors and their alternate levels.
5. Blueprint the matrix requirements and defi ne the data analysis procedure.
6. Carry out the matrix.
7. Examine the data, identify optimum level for the control factors.

MAIN
CONTRIBUTION
TAGUCHI
METHOD
The Taguchi Method of quality control is
an approach to engineering that emphasizes
the roles of research and development
(R&D), and product design and development
in reducing the occurrence of defects and
failures in manufactured goods.

Taguchi Method consists of several key concepts
and tools aimed at improving quality and
performance in product and process design.
Here are the main components:
1. Robust Design: Focuses on creating products that perform consistently under varying conditions by minimizing
sensitivity to external factors.
2. Design of Experiments (DOE): A systematic approach to experimentation that helps identify the effects of multiple
variables on outcomes, enabling optimization.
3. Loss Function: Taguchi introduced the concept that any deviation from the target value results in a loss, emphasizing
that quality should not only be about meeting specifications but minimizing loss to society.
4. Orthogonal Arrays: Utilizes specific experimental designs to efficiently study the effects of multiple factors with fewer
experiments, saving time and resources.
5. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N Ratio): A metric used to measure the robustness of a product or process, aiming to
maximize the signal (desired output) while minimizing noise (variability).
6. Parameter Design: Involves selecting optimal settings for design parameters to improve performance and reduce
variability.
7. Tolerance Design: Focuses on determining acceptable limits for variations in production to ensure quality while
minimizing costs.
8. Focus on Variability: Taguchi's methods help organizations understand and reduce variability in processes, leading to
more consistent quality outcomes.
