is also bound by implicit rules,
Cohen (1990) states that
strategies must be used to start
and maintain a conversation.
Knowing and applying grammar
appropriately is one of the most
basic strategies to maintain a
conversation. The following are
the communicative strategies
that people use when
communicating.

• RESTRICTION

• TOPIC CONTROL
• TOPIC SHIFTING
• REPAIR
• TERMINATION
NOMINATION:
• This involves the opening and establishing
of the topic in the conversation.
EXAMPLES:
• I`d like to introduce our new manager, Peyt Mac.
• Hey how are you? I MISSED YOU!
• This is my friend albert. He`s an amazing artist.
RESTRICTION:
• This involves limiting what the
participants can contribute to the
conversation or discussion
EXAMPLE:
• When you were asked to deliver a speech
in a specific language.
• I will only entertain question, comments,
and suggestions after I finish discussing
everything. Okay?
TURN-TAKING
• This refers to the process in which a
participant stops speaking and yields the
floor to another participant so that he or
she can speak.
EXAMPLE:
• Now it’s your turn to ask questions”.

TOPIC CONTROL
• This occurs when the main or assigned
speaker manipulates the discussions in
order to maintain its flow without moving
away from or changing the topic.

TOPIC SHIFTING
•This occurs when one
intentionally or unintentionally
changes the direction of the flow
of ideas in a conversation
2 Ways to shift topic
1. Speaking topically
-when the listener concentrates on
some phrases from the last statement
mentioned by the speaker.
EXAMPLE:
• PERSON 1: Her joke was so funny I
forgot what I was about to say.
• PERSON 2: So what was that you
were about to say.

when the listener concentrates
on a word, but the newly introduced
idea may not be related to the context
of the topic
EXAMPLE:
• PERSON 1: Her joke was so funny I forgot what

• PERSON 2: That reminds me of my friend Justin
He was the best joker in the classroom.
REPAIR:
• This refers to the act of fixing the violations
in a communication situation.
• Repair is the self-righting mechanism in
any social interaction. If there is a problem
in understanding the conversation,
speaker will always to address and correct
it.

2. Overlapping – speakers talking simultaneously
3. Hogging the floor – speaker talks continuously
4. Being silent – no one wants to speak
5. Trouble in speaking, hearing, or understanding.
EXAMPLE:

TERMINATION:
• This refers to the act of ending a conversation
• Although not all topics may have clear ends, try
to signal the end of the topic through concluding
cues. You can do this by sharing what you
learned from the conversation. Aside from this
soliciting agreement from the others participants
usually completes the discussion of the topic.
