Introduction to AutoCAD
• AutoCAD is a computer-aided tool that allows many different
types of designers to create diverse kinds of drawings and
designs. This program helps designers create their designs
much more quickly than by hand and offers many quick,
easy, and useful features, such as copy and paste.
AutoCAD can create any 2D drawing and 3D model or
construction that can be drawn by hand. The program also
allows the user to group or layer objects, keep objects in a
database for future use, and manipulate properties of objects,
such as size, shape, and location.
AutoCAD vs AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD basics
• 1. User Interface
• Ribbon: Contains tabs with tools for drawing, modifying, and
annotating objects.
• Command Line: This is where you can type commands directly. It helps
in executing tasks faster.
• Drawing Area: The workspace where the designs are created.
• Navigation Bar: Contains tools for panning, zooming, and other
navigational tasks.
• Status Bar: Displays important toggles like Snap, Grid, Ortho Mode, and
Object Snap.
2. Basic Drawing Commands
•LINE (L): Creates straight line segments.
•CIRCLE (C): Draws a circle by specifying the center and radius.
•RECTANGLE (REC): Draws a rectangle by specifying two opposite corners.
•ARC (A): Creates an arc by specifying three points.
•POLYGON (POL): Draws a polygon with a specified number of sides.
•HATCH (H): Fills a closed area with patterns.
3. Basic Modify Commands
•MOVE (M): Moves objects from one place to another.
•COPY (CO): Copies selected objects.
•ROTATE (RO): Rotates objects around a specified point.
•SCALE (SC): Scales objects to make them larger or smaller.
•TRIM (TR): Trims objects to meet the edges of other objects.
•EXTEND (EX): Extends objects to meet the edges of other objects.
•MIRROR (MI): Creates a mirror image of objects.
Uses of AutoCAD
AutoCAD is used across a variety of industries for designing and drafting purposes. Its
ability to produce highly accurate 2D and 3D drawings makes it a powerful tool for
professionals. Below are some common uses of AutoCAD .
1. Architectural Design :
1.1 : building plans
1.2 : 3d modelling
2. Mechanical engineering :
2.1 : machine auto parts
2.2 : assembly drawing
3. Electrical engineering
3.1 : circuit diagrams
3.2 : panel layouts
Geometry
1. Points
•Definition: A single coordinate in space, used to mark specific locations.
•Command: POINT or PO
•Use: Points are often used as reference markers or control points for constructing other geometric shapes.
2. Lines
•Definition: Straight segments between two points.
•Command: LINE or L
•Use: Lines are the most basic entities and can be combined to form more complex shapes like polygons.
3. Circles
•Definition: A round shape with a defined center point and radius.
•Command: CIRCLE or C
•Use: Circles are used to draw curved objects such as wheels, holes, or arcs.
4. Arcs
•Definition: A segment of a circle, defined by its start, end, and center point or radius.
•Command: ARC or A
•Use: Arcs are used to represent portions of circles or to create rounded corners.
LAYERS
Layers function like transparent sheets stacked on top of each other. Each layer can
contain specific elements of a drawing (e.g., walls, doors, electrical wiring), and these
layers can be turned on or off to control what’s visible in the drawing.
Key Features of Layers
[Link] Control: You can toggle the visibility of layers on or off to focus on specific
parts of your drawing.
[Link] Color: Each layer can be assigned a different color, making it easier to identify
and distinguish different objects in the drawing.
[Link] Type: You can assign specific line types (e.g., dashed, dotted) to each layer.
[Link] Weight: Controls the thickness of lines on a layer, affecting the appearance
when printed or plotted.
SHORTCUT KEYS IN AUTOCAD
CONCLUSION
• AutoCAD is a powerful and versatile software widely used in
various industries for computer-aided design (CAD). It allows
users to create precise 2D and 3D drawings, making it
essential for architects, engineers, and designers. Its
extensive toolset and customization options enable efficient
drafting, modeling, and documentation. AutoCAD’s
integration with other software and its ability to handle
complex projects make it a valuable tool for professionals
aiming to enhance productivity and accuracy in their work.
