Analyzing the impact of

smartphone addiction on
a ademic performance
among grade 11 students
• This research investigates the impact of smartphone
addiction on the academic performance of Grade 11
students. It aims to understand the relationship
between excessive smartphone use and students’
grades. Recent studies have shown a negative
correlation between smartphone addiction and
academic achievement, suggesting that students
struggling with phone addiction tend to perform worse
in school. This study will explore this link further and
potentially provide insights for educators and parents
on how to support students’ academic success.
• A 2022 study published in “International Journal of
Environmental Research and Public Health” examined
smartphone addiction prevalence and its association
with academic performance, physical health, and
mental well-being among university students in Saudi
Arabia. The study found that smartphone-addicted
participants were more likely to have lower academic
performance, be physically inactive, and have poor
sleep, highlighting the detrimental effects of
smartphone addiction on various aspects of well-being.
Cognitive-Behavioral Theory
• CBT suggests that maladaptive behaviors, such as smartphone
addiction, are learned and can be unlearned through cognitive
restructuring and behavioral interventions. Social Cognitive
Theory emphasizes the role of observational learning, social
experiences, and reciprocal determinism in behavior. Students
may develop smartphone addiction through social interactions
and the observation of peers. Self-Determination Theory
focuses on the degree to which an individual’s behavior is self-
motivated and self-determined. Smartphone addiction can
undermine students’ intrinsic motivation for academic
activities, leading to poorer academic outcomes.
• This study looks at how smartphone addiction might be
affecting the academic performance of Grade 11 students. By
surveying students about their smartphone use and gathering
their grades and test scores, we aim to understand if there’s a
connection between heavy smartphone use and lower academic
achievement. We’ll use this data to see if things like how often
students use their phones or how dependent they feel on them
are linked to their school performance. By analyzing this
relationship and considering other factors like family
background and extracurricular activities, we hope to uncover
insights that could help students manage their smartphone use
in a way that supports better academic outcomes.
