OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners
will be able to:
Define a rate.
Explain the uses of rates.
Appreciate the importance of
understanding rates in everyday life.
A rate is a comparison of two
quantities with different units.
For example, if you know how
far you’ve travelled and how
long it took, you can use a
rate to show how fast you
were going.
Ang rate ay pag-kumpara ng
dalawang bagay na hindi
magkapareho. Halimbawa, kung
alam mo kung gaano kalayo ang
napuntahan mo at kung gaano
katagal ka bumiyahe, malalaman
mo kung gaano ka kabilis gumalaw.
In writing the general
form of a rate, it could
be; quantity A/quantity
B.
To remember what rate is, here is the
acronym related to the definition of the
rate.
Relationship
Among
Two
Entities
Let’s look at a few examples to
understand this better:
1. Relationship between Distance and
Time
If a car travels 162 kilometers in 2
hours, we calculate the speed (rate) by
dividing 162 kilometers by 2 hours:
Speed = 162 kilometers/2 hours
=
81 kilometers per hour
The car travels 81 kilometers in
one hour. So, the unit rate here
is 81 kilometers per hour.
2. Weekly allowance
Sarah is a Grade 7 student and
receives an allowance of P500.00
for 5 days from her parents, if we
calculate her budget for a day how
much will it be?
Budget = P 500.00/ 5 days
= 100
pesos per day
This means Sarah gets 100
pesos for each day. The
unit rate here is 100 pesos
per day.
3. Price and Quantity
Imagine you are at a grocery
store and see that 3 apples
cost Php60. To find the cost
per apple, you divide Php60 by
3 apples:
Cost per apple = P 60/3 apples
=
20 pesos per apple
This means each apple costs
20 pesos. The unit rate here is
20 pesos per apple.

Alright class let’s
wrap up what we’ve
learned today.
Can anyone remember
what the acronym
RATE stands for?
What does a
rate show us?
Now, let’s think about how we
use rates in our everyday lives.
Can someone give an example
of a rate they use or encounter
often?
