PROPERTIES OF

REGULAR AND
IRREGULAR
POLYGONS
• Classify polygon according to its
sides and as regular or irregular.
• Name, describe, and compare
regular and irregular polygons
with 5, 6,8, or 10 sides based on
measurements of sides and
angles.
Identify if the polygon
is regular or irregular
is presented.

POLYGON
When can you say that a polygon is
regular or irregular?
A polygon is regular if the
measurements of its sides and
angles are congruent. If not,
then it is irregular.
I want everyone to look
around the classroom or think
about objects you have at
home. Can you identify
something that looks like a
regular or irregular polygon?
Let’s unlock some prefixes that we
will encounter in our lesson.
1. Penta comes from the Greek word "pente,” which means
"five."
2. Hexa comes from the Greek word "hex," which means
"six."
3. Octa comes from the Greek word "okto," which means
"eight."
4. Deca comes from the Greek word "deka," which means
"ten.”
Look at the figure below. What
have you observed?
The figure has four
equal sides and
four equal
measures of
angles.
What is the name of this figure? Is
this a regular or irregular polygon?
Why?
The figure is a square. And the
figure is a regular polygon
because it has four equal
measures of sides and angles
Classification of Angles According to
Number of Sides
Directions: Classify, name, describe,
and compare the given polygons .
Name of polygon: Hexagon
No. of sides: 6
Is it regular or Irregular
polygon: Irregular polygon
Give your reason(s): Sides and
angles are not all equal.
Name of polygon:
Pentagon
No. of sides: 5
Is it regular or Irregular
polygon: Regular polygon
Give your reason(s): Sides
and angles are all equal.
Directions: Consider the polygons below.
Classify, name, describe, and explain your
answer.
How do you classify if the polygons are
regular or irregular?

Polygons can be classified as

regular, or irregular based on
the equality of their sides and
angles.
How do you name, describe, and
compare regular and irregular
polygons with 5, 6,8, or 10 sides
based on measurements of sides
and angles?
• A regular pentagon has 5 equal measures of sides and
angles, while an irregular pentagon has 5 sides with
different measures of sides and angles.
• A regular hexagon has 6 equal measures of sides and
angles, while an irregular hexagon has 6 sides with
different measures of sides and angles.
• A regular octagon has 8 equal measures of sides and
angles, while an irregular octagon has 8 sides with
different measures of sides and angles
• A regular decagon has 10 equal measures of sides and
angles, while an irregular decagon has 10 sides with
different measures of sides and angles.
Classify/name the
polygon being
described.

Problem: Rachel is looking at two shapes: one has 5
sides, all of which are equal, and another has 6
sides, but the sides are of different lengths. Classify
each polygon and explain your reasoning.
The shape with 5 equal sides is a Regular
Pentagon because all its sides and angles
are equal. The shape with 6 sides of
different lengths is an Irregular Hexagon
because its sides and angles are not equal.
