INTRODUCTION
Finland is in Europe. It has got around 53 millions of inhabitants. The total area is 338.000 km. The capital of Finland is Helsinki. Finnish and Swedish are the languages of Finland.

The first inhabitants of Finland were the Sami (Lapp) people, who were forced to move to the arctic regions. By 1809 the whole of Finland was conquered by Alexander l of Russia. In 1917 Finland declared the independence.
In 1995 Finland became a member of the European Union.

This is the flag of Finland.

This is the shield of Finland.

The president of Finland is Tarja Halonen.

The current Prime Minister is Jyrki Katainen of the National Coalition Party.
Monetary unit: Euro. Government: Republic.

Finland is predominately Christian. The Lutheran Church is the main denomination.

In northern Finland winters are long and very cold, while summers are surprisingly warm, but brief. In the southern areas of Finland winter temperatures are milder, but still cold, while summer days can be downright pleasant.

There are three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The typical meals of Finland are:

Viili (yogurt like fermented milk product).


Perunamuusi (mashed potatoes). Lihapullat (meatballs often with gravy sauce). Leipajuusto (fresh cow's milk cheese).
