Dependent and Independent
Variables
Did you know that if you can add
1+1 then you can learn today’s
lesson about variables?
Ok…here it goes!
1+1= 2
So, I guess you’re ready!
2 + ____ =__?__
What does this problem
equal?
You’re right! It Depends…
2+2=4
2+4=6
2+50=52
2+2=4
2+4=6
2+50=52
In every example, we …and it affected
changed one number… the answer!
Therefore, the answer depended on
the number we changed!
Simple, but try it!
10+__=__
10+__=__
10+__=__
Fill in the above problems to make 3 true math sentences.
You ask… ? ?
What does this ?
have to do
? with Science?
?
? ? ?
Variables are used in Math and
Science!
A variable is… something that can be changed.
In our math problems, the numbers we
changed were called variables.
2+2=4
A constant is… something that does not change.
In our math problems, the number we decided
not to change could be called a constant.
Independent
Science variables – the one
experiments use…factor
changed by the person doing the
experiment.
Dependent variables – the factor being
measured in an experiment.
Constants – all the factors that stay the
same in an experiment.
In our math problems we used
independent and dependent
variables too!
Independent variable
(The one number we changed)
2+2=4
Dependent variable
Constant (The number that depended
(It stayed the same) on the independent variable)
TYPES OF
VARIABLES
CATEGORICAL QUANTITATIVE
VARIABLE VARIABLE
• A variable that is • A variable that
made up of varies in degree or
different types or mount of
categories of the phenomenon
phenomenon.
• Annual income: 0-
• Gender: Male and high level of income
ROLES OF
VARIABLES
INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT
VARIABLE VARIABLE
• A variable that is • A variable that
presumed to changes because
of another
cause changes in variable: the effect
another variable: or outcome
causal variable variable
Amount of studying affects test grades
Independent Variables
• These variables are ones that are more or
less controlled.
• You might manipulate these variables as
needed.
• They still vary, but the variation is
relatively known (like seconds, or days)
• It is easy to figure the next independent
variable.
Dependent Variables
• Dependent variables are not controlled or
manipulated, but instead are simply
measured.
• Dependent Variables depend on what the
independent variable is.
Independent V. Dependent
• Intentionally • Intentionally left
manipulated alone
• Controlled • Measured
• Vary at known rate • Vary at unknown
• Cause rate
• Effect
In a study to determine
whether how long a
student sleeps affects test
scores
•You want to compare
brands of paper towels,
to see which holds the
most liquid.
