• Introduction about internet
• Learn about the computer network types
• Learn about PAN, MAN, LAN and WAN
• Practice

2
Introduction
The Internet, sometimes called simply
"the Net" is a worldwide system of
computer networks. A network of
networks in which users at any one
computer can, if they have permission,
get information from any other
computer (and sometimes talk directly
to users at other computers).

3
IP Address
In order to identify themselves on a network,
every computer has an IP address. An IP
address is in the form of “[Link]” for
example (this IP address corresponds to the
google server “[Link]”).

4
Computer network types

Generally, we distinguish networks on their geographical span. It ranges from

small networks, as small as the distance between a cell phone and its Bluetooth
headphone, to the largest network on earth which is the internet itself.

Computer network types

A personal area network (PAN) interconnects

technology devices, typically within the range
of a single user, which is approximately 10
meters or 33 feet. These are all Bluetooth
enabled devices.

One of the most common real-world examples

of a PAN is the connection between a
Bluetooth earpiece and a smartphone. PANs
can also connect laptops, tablets, printers,
keyboards, and other computerized devices.

A local area network (LAN) is a WLAN stands for Wireless Local

collection of devices connected in Area Network. The primary
one physical location, such as a advantage of using a WLAN is that it

RJ45 cables are usually used for
connecting the devices to the switch.

Computer network types

A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a

computer network that connects computers within
a metropolitan area, which could be a single large
city, multiple cities and towns, or any given large
area with multiple buildings. A MAN is larger than
a local area network (LAN) but smaller than a
wide area network (WAN). MANs do not have to
be in urban areas; the term "metropolitan" implies
the size of the network, not the demographics of
the area that it serves.

12
Computer network types

A wide area network (WAN) has a large capacity,

connecting many computers over a large area, and are
inherently scalable. A WAN is often created by joining
several LANs together, such as when a business that
has offices in different countries links the office LANs
together. Because WANs are often geographically
spread over large areas and links between computers
are over long distances.
Internet is an example of WAN

Practice 1
For each of the following networks, specify its type: LAN, WLAN, MAN, OR WAN.

Network Description Type

The internet
A school network
A network between two banks in the same city.
Upload a photo from your Smartphone to your desktop computer
Two students sharing files, one in Africa and the second in Europe
Playing games in a gaming lounge
You are using a wireless printer connected to your laptop
Connect between a Bluetooth mouse and Laptop

Practice 1(Solution)
For each of the following networks, specify its type: LAN, WLAN, MAN, OR WAN.
