FLUID MECHANICS II

WATER FLOW METERING DEVICES: NOTCHES AND WEIRS

CONTENTS
Notches and the various types
Weirs and the types
Difference between notch and weir
Calculations on the discharge over notches and weirs

Notches and weirs are used to regulate the flow of fluid of different sizes and
different methods.
Notch-is an opening provided in the side of a tank in a way that the opening extends even above the free
surface of the liquid in the tank. It is designed to measure the flow rate of water from a tank
or a small channel

Weir-Weirs are notches cut in a dam to discharge the surplus quantity of water .

Notch weir

The main difference between a notch and a weir is the quantity at which they measure the liquid flowing
through them

Difference between notch and weir

notch weir

• may be defined as an opening provided in the • may be defined as any regular obstruction in
side of the tank or vessel such that the liquid an open stream over which the flow takes
surface in the tank is below the top edge of place
the opening. • Large structure
• Small structure
• Made of concrete
• Made of metallic plates
• Measure large flow rate
• Measure small flow rates

Conclusion
• Flood control and water management are done generally by
application of notches and weirs
• The many types of weirs offer a spread of tools capable of measuring
and adjusting flow in various situations
• Water flow data can also be useful for environmental impact studies
