PICTIONARY:
AN
EXPANDED
DEFINITION
This creative and engaging activity will challenge
you to come up with unique and imaginative
definitions for words corresponding to each letter of
the alphabet.
The aim is to expand our vocabulary, enhance
critical thinking skills, and have fun as you create
a scrapbook-style collection of word-associations.
1. Formation of Definitions:
a. Each group must make a definition of words
from A to Z. For each letter, they must provide
five words to be defined.
b. Students should create five words associated
with their assigned letter.
c. For each word, provide a formal definition and
an expanded definition using the different
techniques.
2. Formal Definition:
a. The formal definition should be a concise
explanation of the word's meaning.
b. It can be sourced from a dictionary or created
by the students.
c. It must include the three components namely:
term, broad category, and distinguishing
characteristics.
Formal Definition of Words
• Formal sentence definition is composed of
the term being defined, the class of object or
concept to which the term belongs, and its
distinguishing characteristics that
distinguish it from all others of its class.
3. Expanded Definition:
a. The expanded definition should creatively
associate the word with other concepts,
experiences, or objects.
b. It should go beyond the literal meaning
and explore imaginative connections.
Democracy is a system of government in which power
is vested in the people, who rule either directly or
through freely elected representatives. This concept
traces back to ancient Greece. In Athens, citizens
participated directly in decision-making processes
through assemblies and juries, laying the groundwork
for modern democratic principles such as equality,
freedom of speech, and the rule of law.
4. Identifying the Technique:
a. For each expanded definition, students should
identify the technique used to expand the
definition.
b. Examples of techniques may include evoking
the senses, etymology, description, historical
references, examples or anecdotes,
contrast/negation, comparison, etc.
5. Picture Association:
a. Students should create or select a picture
that represents the word and its expanded
definition.
b. The picture can be hand-drawn, digitally
created, or sourced from a suitable image
repository.
6. Scrapbook Format:
a. Students will organize their word-
associations, formal definitions, expanded
definitions, identified techniques, and
pictures in a creative scrapbook-style
format.
b. Each letter should have its own dedicated
page or section, showcasing the word-
associations in an appealing and visually
engaging manner.
c. Students are encouraged to use colors,
illustrations, and other artistic elements to
enhance the overall aesthetic of their
scrapbook.

• The formal definitions provided for each
word should be clear, concise, and
accurate.
Expanded Definition:
(25 points)
• The expanded definitions should provide a
detailed explanation or description of the word,
going beyond the formal definition.
• The expanded definitions should effectively
utilize language techniques to enhance the
description.
Identified Technique:
(10 points)
• The identified technique used to expand the
definition should be appropriate and effectively
employed.
• The technique should enhance the understanding
or visual representation of the word.
Associated Picture:
(15 points)
• The hand-drawn or crafted pictures should
clearly represent the word and demonstrate
creativity.
• The pictures should be visually appealing and
well-executed.
Resourcefulness:
(10 points)
• The use of recyclable materials and
resourcefulness in creating the associated
pictures should be evident.
• Students should demonstrate innovative ways of
utilizing materials at hand.
Presentation and Organization:
(20 points)
• The scrapbook should be neatly organized and
visually appealing.
• The layout, arrangement, and overall
presentation of the scrapbook should showcase
creativity and effort.
