4 UAM Equations: 5 variables:

vf = final velocity
vi = initial velocity
Equation 1: d= distance/displacement
t = time
Equation 2: d a = acceleration
units:
Equation 3: vf2 vf = m/s
vi = m/s
d= m
Equation 4: d)t t=s
a = m/s2
SAMPLE PROBLEMS:
1. A rock was dropped on top of the
building and hits the ground after 5
seconds. What is the height of the
building?
Solution:
Given: 5 seconds = time
9.8 m/s2=acceleration due to gravity
? = distance (height of the building)
Formula: d

= (0) (5s) + (0.5) (9.8 m/s2) (5s)2

= 0 + (0.5) (9.8 m/s2) (25s2)
= 0 + 122.5 m
= 122.5 m
SAMPLE PROBLEMS:
2. A rock was dropped on top of the
building that is 122.5 m high. How long
will the rock hit the ground?
Solution:
Given: 9.8 m/s2=acceleration due to gravity
122.5 m = distance (height of the building)
? = time

Formula: d

122.5 m = (0) (?) + (0.5) (9.8 m/s2) (?)2

122.5 m = 0 + (0.5) (9.8 m/s2) (s2)
122.5 m = 0 + 4.9 m/s2
122.5 m = 4.9 m/s2
122.5 m ÷ 4.9 m/s2 = 25s2
s2
d =5s
Let’s do this!
1. Bea was standing on top of the building
and drops a rock and hits the ground
after 5s. What is the final velocity just
before it hits the ground?
Let’s do this!
2. Bea was standing on top of the building
that is 122.5m high and decided to drop
a rock. What is the final velocity of the
rock just before it hits the ground?
