MANAGEMENT STUDIES)
INTRODUCTION
Success is not an accident. It is the result of our
attitude and our attitude is a choice. Hence
success is a matter of choice and not chance.
What is Attitude?
A study attributed to Harvard university found
that when a person gets a job 85% of the time it
is because of their attitude, and only 15%ofthe
time because of how smart they are.
Surprisingly almost 100% of education go to
teach facts and figures which account for only
155of success in work.
CONT..
Attitude is an individual predisposed
state of mind.
Attitude is a relatively enduring
organization of beliefs, feelings and
behavioral tendencies towards socially
significant objects, groups, events.
CONT..
Attitude structure can be described in terms of
three components.
1. Affective component-involves a persons
feeling/emotions.
Example- I'm scared of spiders.
2. Behavioral– the attitude how we act or
behave.
Example- I will avoid spiders and scream if I see
one.
3. Cognitive- a persons belief/ knowledge
Example- I believe spiders are dangerous
HOW TO BUILD POSITIVE A ATTITUDE
1. Change focus, look for the Positive – lets start
looking for what is right in a person or
situation instead of looking what is wrong.
Some people always look at negative side.
Example- look the Gold
Who is a pessimist?
Feel bad when they feel good
Spend most of their life at complaining other
Forget their blessing and count their troubles
CONT..
Who is optimist ?
Look the sunny side of everything
Think only the best, work only the best and expect
only the best.
Spend so much time improving themselves.
Have no time to criticize others.

2. Make a habit of doing now – a completed
task is fulfilling and energizing. If you want
to build and maintain a positive attitude,
get into the habit of living in the present
and doing it now.
Learn the phrase “do it now”
3. Develop an attitude of gratitude – count
your blessing not your troubles. Remember
many of your blessings are hidden.
CONT…
4. Get into a continuous education – the most
important thing one can learn is to “learn to
learn” . True education is training of both the
head and the heart.
Education that does not train the heart can be
dangerous. Education that builds fundamental
traits of character – such as honesty,
compassion, courage and responsibility. We
don’t need more academic education , we need
more values education.
CONT..
5. Build a positive self-esteem – self-esteem is the way
we feel about ourselves.
There are two types of people in this world giver and
taker. Takers eat well and givers sleep well.
Givers have high self – esteem, positive attitude and
they serve society.
As human beings, we all have the need to receive
and take. But a healthy personality with high self
esteem is one that not only has its need to take but
also to give.
CONT..
6. Stay away from negative influence- today's
teenagers learn from adult behavior and the
media, they face peer pressure.
What are negative influences :
a. Negative people- an eagle’s egg was placed in the nest
of a prairie chicken. The egg hatched and the little
eagle grew up thinking it was a chicken. The eagle
did what the chicken did. It scratched in the dirt for
seeds. it never flew more than a few feet. One day he
saw an Engel flying gracefully in the open sky. he
asked the chicken “what is that beautiful bird”?the
chicken replied that is an Engle. He is an
outstanding bird, but you can not fly like him
CONT..
b. Drugs
c. Pornography
d. Negative movies and television programs –
today kids are learning their attitudes and
values more from television and movies than
anywhere else.
7. Learn to like the things that need to be done-
some things need to be done whether we like
them or not.
CONT..
8. Start your day with a positive- read and
listen something positive first thing in the
morning.
WINNER VERSUS LOSERS
1. Winners are always part of answers, Loser
always part of problems.
2. Winners always has a program, loser always
has an excuse.
3. Winner says “let me do it for you” loser says
“ that is not my job”,
4. Winner see answer for every problems , loser
see a problem for every answers.
5. When winner makes a mistake, he say “ I was
wrong “ loser makes a mistake , he says “ It
wasn’t my fault”
CONT…
6. Winners have dreams, losers have schemes.
7. Winners are a part of the team, losers are
apart from the team.
8. Winners say “ I must do something” losers say
“something must be done”
9. A winner makes commitment , a loser makes
promises.
10. Winners see the gain , losers see the pain.
PRACTICE
Make a list of the things you would like to
change about yourself.(From the above 8
steps) Then list the benefits of the change to
you and others. Finally establish time table
and comment yourself to make the changes .
Write these action steps down on index card
and read them every day for the next 21 days.
For 30 minutes at your home, office and
socially.
WHAT IS SUCCESS ?
A lot of research has gone into the subject of
success and failure. All that we need to do is
learn our lessons from history. When we study
the life stories of successful people, we find
that they have certain qualities in common no
matter which period of history they lived in. if
we identify and adopt the qualities of
successful people we shall be successful. The
reverse is just true.
HOW DO WE DEFINE SUCCESS?
Success is the progressive realization of a
worthy goal.
“Progressive” means success is a journey not a
destination. We never arrive. After we reach
one goal we go on to the next and the next
and the next.
“Realization” means it is an experience.
“Worthy” refers to our value system. Which
way are we heading? Positive or negative?
Worthiness determines the quality of the
Success and happiness go hand in hand.
Success is getting what you want and happiness
is wanting what you get.
SOME OBSTACLES TO SUCCESS
1. Ego – Your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you
consider yourself. (the I or self of any person). How the
particular individual thinks, feels, distinguishes himself from
rest.
2. Fear of failure
3. No plan
4. Lack of formalized goals
5. Financial security issue
6. Lack of focus
7. Doing to much
8. Lack of commitment
9. Lack of knowledge / training
10. Lack of priorities
11. Lack of persistence – the quality allows someone to continue
doing something.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
People who have overcome obstacles are
more secure than those who have never
faced them. We all have problems and we
feel discouraged some time. Most people get
disappointed , but winners don’t get
disheartened. Everything is difficult it
becomes easy. We cannot run away from
our problems. Only losers quit and give up.
HOW DO WE MEASURE SCCESS?
True success is measured by the feeling of
knowledge you have done a job well and have
achieved your objective.
Success is not measured by our position in life
but by the obstacles we overcome to get there.
Success in life is not determined by how we are
doing compared with others. Successful people
compete against themselves. They better their
own record and keep improving consistently.
EVERY SUCCESS STORY IS ALSO A STORY OF GREAT
FAILURE
Failure is the highway to success.
Abraham Lincoln became the United States' 16th
President in 1861.
Abraham Lincoln’s inspiring list of obstacles
endured, with a few critical victories he managed
to obtain over his lifetime:
1818: Lost his mother at the age of 9
1832: Lost his job
1832: Defeated for legislature
1833: Failed in business
1833: Went into debt (Took 10 Yrs. to pay off)
1834: Elected to legislature
1835: The woman he loved and was to marry died
1836: Had a nervous breakdown
CONT..
1838: Defeated for Speaker
1843: Defeated for nomination for Congress
1848: Lost re-nomination
1849: Rejected for Land Officer
1854: Defeated for Senate
1856: Defeated for nomination for Vice-
President
1858: Again defeated for Senate
1860: Elected for President of The United
States of America
CONT..
There is no doubt about it, Abraham Lincoln’s life
is a collection of moments where he persisted in the
face of hardship and failure. His record of obstacles
and achievements are guiding lights that prove that
success comes through outlasting our failures.
Hopefully, you’ve come to realize that any defeats
you may came across in your life are only
temporary. And that your success is just a matter
of managing your failures and moving on and
forward towards your goals without losing
enthusiasm.
CONT..
1. I failed a key primary school test two times.
2. Scored 1 out of 120 points on the math portion
of his college entrance exam.

Jack Ma, originally Ma Yun, (born
September 10, 1964, Hangzhou, Zhejiang
province, China), Chinese entrepreneur who
was head of the Alibaba Group, which
comprised several of China's most popular
Web sites, including the business-to-business
marketplace [Link] and the shopping

Jack Ma had a net worth of US$21.8 billion,
making him the richest man in China.
Failure happens. It happens all the time, to everyone, and sometimes can
have a bad effect on us depending on the way we react to it.
Thomas Edison did not do well in school. One of his teachers said that he
was a poor and a lazy student. But this teacher could not have been more
wrong. Edison was dyslexic. Later in his life, he lost most of his hearing.
But he did not let either of these setbacks stop him from doing great
things with his mind. He is widely thought to be one of the smartest
people who ever lived.
Edison was born in 1847. He grew up in Ohio and Michigan. Due to his
dyslexia, he went to school for just three months. He was mostly schooled
at home by his mother. From his mother, Edison learned to love to read.
He read all kinds of books. In fact, reading was what helped him to
become interested in science.
As a young man, Edison lost all the hearing in his left ear. He lost 80
percent of the hearing in his right ear, too. But he never gave up learning
or working hard. At age 16, he made his first invention. It was called the
automatic repeater. It helped people to send messages by telegraph.
Edison failed more than 10,000 before he created the light bulb. Many
situations looked hopeless and pointless. The average person would have
given up on his work. But not him.

CONT..
Successful people don’t do great things , they
only do small things in a great way.
QUALITIES THAT MAKE A PERSON SUCCESSFUL
1. Desire – the motivation to success comes from
the burning desire to achieve the goal. Burning
desire is the starting point of all
accomplishment.
2. Commitment- integrity and wisdom are two
pillars on which to build and keep
commitment. Integrity is keep our
commitment even if we lose money and wisdom
is not to make such foolish commitment.
CONT..
3. Responsibility- accepting responsibility involves taking
calculated risks not foolish risks and being accountable
which is sometimes uncomfortable. Most peoples would
like rather stay in their comfort zone and live passive
lives without accepting responsibilities. Responsible
people accept and learn from their mistakes.
4. Hard Work -everyone likes to win but how many are
willing to put in the effort and time to prepare to win?
It takes scarifies and discipline. There is no substitute
for hard work.
Henery Ford said “ the harder you work, the luckier you
get”
CONT..
5. Character- character is the sum of a
persons value, beliefs and personality. It
reflects our behavior and action.
Character is the combination of integrity,
unselfishness, understanding, courage,
loyalty and respect
