Bending and Torsion of Curved Beams

The document discusses bending of curved beams and includes equations for calculating bending stress in beams with different cross-sectional shapes. It provides examples of bending stress calculation for problems involving beams with rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular, circular, I-section and T-section cross-sections. The document also covers torsion in circular bars and includes equations for shear strain, shear stress, angle of twist and polar moment of inertia.

Problem 1

• A curved beam of rectangular section of 30 mm width, 40

mm depth and mean radius of curvature of 60 mm is initially
unstressed. If a bending moment of 400 Nm is applied to the
beam which tends to straighten it, determine the stresses at
the inner and outer surfaces and sketch a diagram to show
the variation of stress across the section. Also, find the
position of the neutral axis.
Problem 2
• Determine the resultant stresses at P and Q of the frame shown
in Figure below. Also, find the location of the neutral axis.
Problem 3

• A crane hook having a

trapezoidal horizontal
cross-section is 50 mm
wide inside and 30 mm
wide outside. Thickness
of the section is 60 mm.
The crane hook carries a
vertical load of 20 kN
whose line of action is 50
mm from the inside edge
of the section. The centre
of curvature is 60 mm
from the inside edge.
Determine the maximum
tensile and compressive
stresses in the section.
