Understanding Tides and Ocean Currents

The document discusses topics related to the hydrosphere including tides, ocean currents, and their importance. It describes how tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun and how they impact shipping, fishing, and silt deposits. It also explains the two types of ocean currents, their causes including winds and the Coriolis effect, and effects such as modifying climate and fog formation.

Tides
Sea water rises up the shore recedes regular intervals
Spring tides:
The full moon and the new moon –the earth moon and the sun are
in same straight line –combined gravitational the low and high
tides
Neap tides:
In the first and last quarters of the lunar cycle the ocean watter is
pulled in diagonaly opposite directions by the gravitational force
of the sun and the moon
Importance of Tides

• Tides clear mud and Silts deposits from mouth of rivers

• Helps in shipping the harbour and tied goes out and enter when
the tide goes in
• Fishes Come near the cost during the high tide enabling a
beautiful catch
• Important source of renewable energy
Ocean Current

• The continuous movement or drift of ocean water in a

definite direction
• Ocean currents are classified into two types
• warm ocean currents
Water flow from equatorial region towards the polar region
• Cold ocean currents
water flow from polar region towards the equator region
Causes of Ocean Currents
• Ocean currents flow in the direction of prevailing winds
• Water from equatorial areas flows towards the polar region while water
from polar regions flows towards the equator regions
• Rotation of the earth – Due to Coriolis force current generally move in
clockwise direction in the Northern hemisphere and in anti clockwise
direction in the southern hemisphere
• Density of ocean water depending on the temperature and salinity
• Tides and resulting movement
• Land mass may abstract the flow of an ocean current
Effects of Ocean Currents
• Winds passing over warm and cold currents modify the
temperature by making the lands comparatively warmer or colder
• Winds pass over warm currents bring rainfall to the coastal areas
cold current decrease the moisture bearing capacity of the winds
• Mixing of warm and cold currents causes heavy fog - hindering
navigation
• Abundance of plankton also located where the warm and cold
currents meet
• Ships sales along with currents as they can move faster- save time
and fuel
Importance of Hydrosphere

• Play a vital role for life in biosphere

• Water from lakes and rivers is extremely important for domestic
purposes & irrigation
• Linked in transport and communication
• Source of diverse marine life and Marine Products
• Influence the weather and climate
• From tides - Hydroelectricity is generated from rivers
