CHAPTER 1
Introduction
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Mathematics is one of the essential of life. Even the universe
has it's own order , harmony, balance, and abstract beauty.
Mathematics, the queen of all sciences, remains and will remain as
a subject with great charm having an intrinsic value and beauty of
it's own. Since birth, men experiences Mathematics without
realizing it. Even our body deals with mathematics. Man is always
Governed by simple and complex as life goes on. However in spite
the various importance of mathematics, many hate it.
Mathematics is indeed a hard subject to [Link] takes more
time for learners in order to understand this. According to Azañes
(2016) said that;
" You cannot learn mathematics overnight that is next to
impossible". It is a continuous process to be learned by everyone.
No one can learn mathematics in just a wink of the eye or just in a

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study aims to provide valuable information regarding the
performance level in the fundamental topics in mathematics of
Grade 11 students of Eastern Coast High School for School Year
2023-2024.
For students, this study may provide knowledge and awareness of
their performance level in fundamental topics in mathematics
which aims to improve their academic performance.
For School Administration math teacher, this study may be used as
a reference or basic I'm developing activities and strategies to make
students improve their performance in mathematics.
And for future researchers, the result of this research may be a
basis of further studies and can be used as related study.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives were limited to determine and improve
the performance levels in mathematics of Grade 11
students of Eastern Coast High School for School Year
2023-2024.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study focuses on performance level of Grade
11 students regarding fundamental topics in
mathematics who are currently enrolled in Eastern
Coast High School for School Year 2023-2024,
students from Grade 7 to 10 and 12 are excluded in
this research.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
An initial stage of the present studies, collective body of
research work, related to involve variables I,e., mathematical
errors, academic errors, academic achievement and
performance, learning difficulties and disabilities in learning
mathematics was examined extensively, so that proper
guidelines and directions from the objectives , assumptions,
methodologies, and findings may be sought to assist the
various steps of the present studies like determination of the
objective formulation of assumption and hypothesis, selection
of methodologies and to get an understanding of relationship
between different related variables.
The related literature was taken from published and
unpublished materials from private and public schools
libraries, which are found to the subject matter.
MATHEMATICAL ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE
According to Sarsani at el. (2010), studied achievements in
Mathematics of secondary school students are found that
girls performed better than boys Mathematics scholastic
Achievement test; type of school, medium school and
locality influenced the performance in mathematics
scholastic Achievement test. This study found that the girls
committed lesser mistake than the boys as the researchers
found out.
According to Vijayakumani (2010), studied correlates of
academic achievement motivation, the interaction of
academic anxiety and positively to achievement motivation
on academic achievement was not significant different levels
of achievement motivation the interaction effect or gender
and achievement motivation on academic achievement did
not differ significant among levels of academic anxiety.
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
According to Salandanan, pointed out the two problem that the
students teacher in mathematics experienced in teaching first, is to
provide students mathematical skills suitable to the state of
development of their existing concepts and to fits his methods of
presentation to students ability to analyze new material for himself
so that he can synthesize his concepts in ways most meaningful for
him independently.
According to Carpio(2005), studied the difficulties encountered by
the students in mathematics 11 at the Philippines Union College,
Naga View Campus, Naga City. Analysis was based from the teacher
made test. His that finding revealed that the common difficulties
meet by the students in the term of curriculum content 2 were
language of Algebra, Scientific notation and polynomial in one
variable. According to him, students did not meet difficulty in
decimal
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This study focused on the common errors in Mathematics and
ways of overcoming it. To this end, the theory of Bruner, Gagne, and
Vahleen (2001) will be used in this study.
Bruner's discovery on learning emphasized that the students
should be assisted in acquisition of the structure of the field of the
study. He suggested that when students are helped to acquire the
overall patterns of the study, they are more likely to remember what
they learn, comprehend principles and laws that can be applied in a
variety of situations and be prepared for mastering more complex
knowledge.
Applying it in this study, teachers and instructors should guide the
students through proper scaffolding, giving exercises or drills and
enhancement activities to minimize or lessen the errors committed by
the learners in Fundamentals of Mathematics. Teachers are
encouraged to confront students with problems and helped them seek
solutions either independently or by engaging in a group discussion.
Gagne's Learning/Instructional Design Theory. This is prescriptive
and assures learning. According to this theory one cannot adequately
plan instruction without first identifying a measurable learning
outcome. Therefore, teachers must be aware of students' difficulties
so that they can easily identify the measurable learning outcomes
and afterwards plan the necessary instructions for the students. This
scenario triggered the researchers to study and analyze the
difficulties or the errors of the students particularly in Fundamentals
of Mathematics. Learning follows as it is a change in human
disposition or capability that persists over a period of time and not
simply ascribed to processes of growth. Outcomes of learning reflect
the distinct types of skills that individuals acquire as a result of
learning.
K. Vahleen Repair Theory (2001) asserts that the people learn
procedural skills with particular attention to how and why they make
mistakes. This theory emphasizes that when a procedure can be
performed by an individual, an impasse occurs and the students uses
repair strategies or what we call meta-action which result to
incorrect outcomes that lead to mathematical errors.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter is a discussion of the methods and procedures used by
the researchers to arrive at the objective of the study. It includes the
researcher design, respondents of the study, research instruments,
administration of the research instrument, data gathering tools, and
statistical treatment used in data.
Research Design
This study entitled "Performance Level of Grade 11 students on
Fundamental Topics at Eastern Coast High School for School Year 2023-

research analysis. It gathered information with the test question being
administered to the Eastern Coast High School which is in the form of the
standardized test to determine and identify the mathematical errors
encountered in fundamentals
