PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
Problem solving is a skill that is required of every person in almost every aspect of your life. The managers job is permanently a problem solving job. Effective managers are able to solve problem both rationally and creatively, even though, different kinds of skills are required for each type of problem.
Rational problem solving, a kind of problem solving technique that managers used many time each day; and Creative problem solving, a kind of problem solving technique that managers used less frequently. This ability often separates career successes from failure, the Heroes from an ordinary person, and the achievers from the executives.
It produce a dramatic impact on organizational effectiveness.
STEPS IN RATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING
1DEFININIG THE PROBLEM:
1.1 Differentiate facts from opinions;
1.2 Specify underlying causes;
1.3 Utilize everyone involved for information; 1.4 State the problem openly;
1.5 Identify what standards is violated;
1.6 Determine whose problem it is; 1.7 No problem is completely independent of people; 1.8 Avoid stating the problem as a disguised solution. Managers often propose a solution before an adequate solution of a problem has been given.
STEPS IN RATIONAL PROBLEM SOLVING
2GENERATE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS:
2.1 Postpone the selection of any one solution;
2.2 Be sure all involved individuals generates alternatives;
2.3 Specify alternatives that are consistent with goals; 2.4 Specify both short term and long term alternatives; 2.5 Alternatives build on one another; 2.6 Specify alternatives that solve the problem.
Judgment and evaluation, must be postponed to the first acceptable solution suggested isnt the one immediately selected.

3EVALUATE AND SELECT AN ALTERNATIVE:
3.1 Evaluate relative to an optimal standard;
3.2 Evaluate systematically;
3.3 Evaluate relative to goals; 3.4 Individual preferences should also be considered; 3.5 Evaluate direct effects and side effects; 3.6 State the selected alternative openly. This step involves useful weighing of the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed alternatives before making a final selection.

4IMPLEMENT AND FOLLOW-UP ON THE SOLUTION:
4.1 Implement at the proper time and in the right sequence;

Provide opportunities for feedback;
Participation is often the best way to ensure acceptance by others; Establish an ongoing monitoring system; Evaluate based on problem solution; It may provide some positive outcomes, it is unsuccessful unless it solves the problem being considered.
Follow-up not only helps ensure effective implementation but also serves a feedback function by providing information that can be used to improve future problem solving.

5LIMITATIONS: 5.1 There is often uncertainty as to whose definition will be accepted;
5.2 Alternatives are developed on the basis of what was successful in the past;
5.3 Gathering information on each alternative is costly;
5.4 Satisfactory solution, not optimal ones, are usually accepted;
5.5 Resistance to change is a universal phenomena;
5.6 It is not always clear what part of the solution should be monitored or measured on follow-up;
5.7 It may take a long time to implement a solution.
