Objective
I can describe the structures and
function of plants.
Plant structure: The different parts of
the plant i.e. roots, stems and leaves
Vocabulary
Root: a structure in a vascular plant, usually underground
that absorbs water and minerals from the soil.
Stem: stems are structures that have tubes to carry water,
sugar, and minerals to different parts of the plant.
Leaves: Leaves are plant parts that use sunlight to produce
sugar for the plant’s food.
Chlorophyll: A substance in leaves that captures energy from
the sun during the day.
Photosynthesis: The process by which plants use energy
from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into
sugar and oxygen.
Big Idea:
Living things
are adapted for
survival in their
environment.

Classifying
Plants
Plants are classified
(arranged or sorted) into
two groups, vascular
plants and nonvascular
plants.
Vascular
Plants
• Vascular plants are
much larger in size.
• Vascular plants
have true (real
roots, stems and
leaves.
Nonvascular
Plants
• Nonvascular plants are
not tall.
• They grow very close
Lichen
to the ground
• Nonvascular plants do
not have “true” roots,
stems and leaves.
Moss
Roots
Vascular plants have roots which are underground.
These roots absorb (take in or soak up) water and
nutrients from the soil and transport it through the
plant.
