INDIAN ADAPTATION BY
Dr. J Bharath Raj
Developmental schedules
Used with severely retarded children
who are not receptive to verbal, nonverbal
and performance tests
Also used with small children and infants
Testing with infants are difficult because
of short attention span and greater
susceptibility to fatigue
INTRODUCTION
The developmental Screening Test is designed for
the purpose of measuring mental development of
children from birth to 15 years of age.
Larger number of items at early age level permits
assessment of very young children.
Italicized items on the schedule cover the speech
and Language development.
The test provides for a brief and fairly dependable
assessment without requiring the use of performance
test. Appraisal can be done in a semi-structured
interview with the child and a parent or a person
well aquatinted with the child.
Originally 124 items were derived from earlier
schedule and studies out of which finally 88 items
were settled upon by the frequency of their
appearance in the various sources consulted.
At early age levels considerable number of motor
behaviour items appear as is has many neurological
and integrative point for development itself. There
are items of adaptive behaviour which represent
sensori-motor adjustment to object, person and
situation. Language development behaviour items
find a place which are inclusive of all visible and
audible forms of communication like vocalization,
words etc. Personal social behaviour items also find
a place as they comprise of a child’s personal
responsiveness to the social culture of which he is a
member e.g. play cooperativeness.
Method of assessment
Appraisal of the child is done on other
developmental schedules starting from ‘ Basal
age’ where all characteristics at a particular age
are passed and gradually moving through upper
age level. Assessment is simply determining
how well a child’s behaviour fits one age level
constellation rather than another by direct
comparison.
SCORING
The examiner should collect information on DST test items regarding child’s
abilities through direct observation and supplement it by interviewing the mother.
If the particular characteristic described by the item has clearly emerged a mark
may be made on the left side of the item.
Add up passed scores - find out Developmental Age .
Compute Social Quotient DA / MA x 100
Developmental Age / Actual Age x 100 = D Q
Range IQ Support
Normal Intelligence 85-115 Reasonable
Borderline Retardation 68-84 Limited
Mild Retardation 52-67 Extensive
Moderate Retardation 36-51 Pervasive
Severe Retardation 20-35
Profound Retardation Less than 20
