4
Methods of Steering
1. Push-the-bit
 Side force applied to the bit to increase side cutting action

2. Point-the-bit
 Introduces an offset to the bit trajectory - analogous to steering with a bent motor

3. Hybrid systems
 Combination of push the bit and point the bit.

4. Control systems

5. Hardware options
Steering Control

 Fast Downlink Protocol
– 15% variance in flow
– Downlink while drilling
– 5:04 minutes per downlink
– Longer downlink available for slow-reacting pumps
– 64 available settings – gravity and magnetic

Xceed at a Glance
• Point the bit system
• Max RPM 350
• Generally more DLS than “Push-the-bit” systems.
• Operates in more abrasive environments
• Tool available in “675” or “900”
PowerDrive Xceed – big picture

3 sections: Power Generation, Sensors/Control, Steering

High reliability through: o
 Proven MWD sensor and servo technology, 150 C rating
 All steering control in oil bath, no moving seals
 Designed to operate in abrasive environments
 Sensor package 12.8/16.7 ft from bit
Provides RT continuous TF, Inc. and Azi. Which allow improved control
and Capability to kick-off from vertical
Steering Control – big picture

Bit shaft has a fixed offset from the axis of collar (eccentric)
Collar supplies drilling torque directly to the bit shaft
DC motor holds offset tool face geo-stationary by rotating at collar
rpm in the opposite direction
Three points contact provides the steering tendency

The PowerV Advantage

PowerV Conventional Motor

PowerDrive vorteX
Performance Drilling
What is Vortex
The PowerDrive vorteX powered rotary steerable system
(RSS) has additional torque capacity that allows a higher
weight on bit for increased ROP for more productive drilling.
The system can be run with either a PowerDrive X5 or a
PowerDrive Xceed front end, depending on drilling
conditions, for maximum revolutions per minute, resulting in
longer runs.
PowerDrive vorteX—Performance Drilling
 Increases ROP with higher bit RPM
Motor
 Reduces casing wear
 Reduces Shock & Vibration
 Can be combined with both PowerV
(vertical) and PowerDrive (directional)
applications
 Improves efficiency when rig
Control unit
is limited
 High-torque motors Bias Unit
 Coiled Tubing drilling
