TREND
A Trend is the direction of CHANGE and GROWTH that takes shape
over time. They are manifested in changes in various sectors of
society like:

• Technology
• Politics
• Economics
• Health care
• Social interactions
• Fast emerging behavior and short-lived
ideas.
• Temporary fashion, a craze, interest, or
activity that people follow
enthusiastically, but lasts for a short
period of time.

SPOTTING A TREND

• A person who starts a trend is called trendsetter.


• Trendspotting refers to the study of trends and the way they develop
and affect society.
• Trend analysis is based on trendspotting but it extends this into
developing future scenarios and so they say that to follow a trend, one
must not only be conscious of what is currently happening but be
wise enough to predict the future. (Urgel, 2017)

1. Yaya Dub (Maine Mendoza) used dubsmash and got
so popular overnight. Dubsmash is a mobile app that
creates short selfie videos dubbed with famous
sounds.
2. High fructose corn syrup is present in fruit juices,
cakes, ice cream, sweets, and chocolates, and was
found to be the culprit for obesity and diabetes.
3. More and more youth of today are fond of using
high-tech gadgets like tablets and smartphones
4. More people around the globe are engaged in the
mobile app TikTok.
5. The “Trumpets” dance challenge and the mannequin
challenge which went viral on television and social
media were practiced by people of all walks of life.

1. Number of Participants - pertains to people who


follow a certain trend which is started by an
individual or a group of people. The group then
grows into a community, and eventually swells into
national and international societies.

formed from repetitive actions of people.

3. Long period of Time - one of the crucial elements
of a trend which means that a trend has to have a
long-time frame, sometime running for decades. A
trend may experience some ups and downs in
popularity, may fade away, and may recur.

4. Cause - refers to the starting point of a trend which


can be an idea, a technology, an event or a person. All
trends have beginnings and someone or somebody
definitely started it.

01 Microtrends

These are “little things that happen all


around us all the time.” These trends
happen right now and are outright
observable.
02 Macrotrends

These are “aggregated microtrends or more


sweeping changes that are affecting society.”
They provide major changes that are
perceptible in the societal level for a longer
period.
03 Megatrends

These are macrotrends that have grown up and


moved out. They are big, bold and affect the
lives of the human race. They can last for
decades and are “so pervasive as to be generally
known.” They have become the prevailing
condition that has become too normal.
04 Gigatrends

These are “trends that are so general that they


affect most areas of human life─ or, at least,
more than one aspect of life or more than one
industry.” They are usually identified to define
an era
Identifying
Emerging Patterns
1. Documentation - able to record your observations which
you consider related to any trend.
2. Archive or Memory - used to easily retrieve any
documentation you have kept.
3. Analysis - stage where examination and combination happen.
4. Presentation - representing your findings for easy
understanding as a way of analysis.
ACTIVITY

TO BRING MATERIALS: old newspaper, magazine,


paste/glue, scissor, brochure.

Directions: Make a collage showing the concept of


elements and characteristics of a trend. Provide a
concise explanation of your work.
