Sound Propagation in Different Mediums

The document discusses how sound propagates through different mediums. It describes experiments showing sound propagating through solid, liquid, and gas mediums by using a metal spoon, water, and air. Sound propagates fastest through solids since molecules are closest together, then liquids, and slowest through gases where molecules are farthest apart.

LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students
e expected to:
 demonstrate and describe the
propagation of sound;
 differentiate the propagation of
sound through solid, liquid and gas;
and
 recognize the significance of
propagation of sound in one’s life.

materials
Set-up A
• 1 meter string and a metal spoon
Set-up B
• 1.5 liter of water, bell and small
pail
Set-up C
• 1 meter string , a metal spoon and
a pencil
Procedures
Set-up
A handle.
 Tie the middle of the string to the spoon

 Wrap the string ends around your left and

right index fingers. Put the tips of these
fingers gently in your ears and hold them
there.
 Stand over your desk so that spoon dangles
without touching your body or the desk.
Then move a little to make the spoon tap the
desk lightly. Observe carefully.
Procedures
Set-up
B
 Fill the small pail container with a 1.5
liter of water.
 Place your ear against the container.
 Let someone to place the bell inside
the container and make it ring.
Observe carefully.
Procedures
Set-up
C
 Tie the spoon in the middle of the
string with a double knot.
 Let one student to hold the ends of
the string.
 Have the other student strike the
spoon with the pencil. Observe
carefully.
questions
A. What did you hear when the spoon tapped
the desk?
B. How do you think the sound waves reached
your ears?
C. Does sound propagate in solid?
D. What have you observe when you place
your ear against the small pail container
while someone rings the bell inside?
E. How did sound waves get from the ringing
bell to your ears?
F. Does sound propagate in liquid?
questions
G. What did you hear when someone struck
the spoon with a pencil?
H. How did sound waves reached your ears
from the struck spoon by a pencil?
I. Does sound propagate in gas?
J. How do sounds that propagate through
different medium compare? How can you
explain this difference?
K. In which medium do sounds propagate
fastest? How about the slowest? Explain
your answer.
Sound Propagation
 Sound as a wave has the ability to
travel or propagate.
 Sound is propagated by the vibration of
molecules within the medium. When a
medium vibrates, the molecules in the
medium is disturbed and also vibrates
thus a reaction process begins.
 Anyone within the vibrating medium
will be able to hear sound.
Sound in solid, liquid and gas
 Sound waves propagate through matter
also called medium. Sound propagates
through solid, liquid and gaseous (gas)
medium.
 Since it needs molecules to move, the
spaces between the molecules
determine whether the sound travels
faster or slower in some ways.
Molecules in a medium
Sound in solid, liquid and gas
 Sound propagates fastest in
solid (molecules are closer
together),
 moderate in liquid (molecules
are slightly closer together)
 and slowest in gas (molecules
are farther apart).
