UNDERSTANDING THE SAFETY DATA SHEET (SDS)
About This Module
LEARNING
OVERVIEW OBJECTIVES
Hazardous chemicals are found in many workplaces, and every day millions of workers
face the potential for exposure. Therefore, it is important to know what chemicals are
in your workplace, what hazards they present, and how to limit exposure to those
chemicals.
This course provides information on the purpose of the Globally Harmonized System
of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and introduces the safety data
sheet (SDS) to all persons who may encounter hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
By the end of the training, you will be able to summarize the GHS and how it affects
hazard communication in the workplace; recognize how the SDS improves your access
to vital safety, health, and environmental information about chemicals used in the
workplace; explain the accessibility of SDSs in the workplace, and identify the 16
sections of the SDS and the information contained in each section.

• GHS-compliant SDSs:
· Globally consistent and detailed hazard information
· Information to prevent accidents and harmful exposures
· Immediately accessible
· Consistent structure facilitates locating critical information
• Consult the SDSs for the substances you use.
