Batanes, officially the Province of Batanes, is an
archipelagic province in the Philippines,
administratively part of the Cagayan Valley region.
It is the northernmost province in the Philippines,
and the smallest, both in population and land area.
The capital is Basco, located on the island of
Batan.

Historical, Cultural, and Heritage Attractions

 Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel


Is an underwater tunnel network in the Philippines, Tukon Hills, Basque Country. During
the Japanese occupancy of the Philippines until World War II, it served as a shelter for the
imperial Japanese forces. The Japanese imperial forces forced the Ivatans, due to their
strategic position, to dig tunnels for refuge at Tukon Hills. In these tunnels, the Japanese
soldiers hid for years before the end of World War II.
Mount Carmel Chapel
• One of the churches that you should not miss upon going to Batanes
is the Mt. Carmel Church which is popularly known as Tukon Chapel.
The design of the lovely Tukon chapel was based on the traditional
Ivatan stone houses.
House of Dakay
• House of Dakay is said to be the oldest stone house
existing in Batanes and considered as a UNESCO
Heritage Building. Located in the town of San Jose de
Ivana in Batan Island, the structure has remained
intact over the years.
Natural Attractions
• Sabtang Island
 Sabtang Island is one of the major islands among the ten
islands in Batanes. It is situated in the southernmost part of
Batanes and is the smallest among the three inhabited
islands.
Di-atay Beach
• Is a beautiful cove with multi-colored rocks
and white sand ideal for picnics and beach
combing. Located along the highway of
Mahatao, it is 9.85 kilometers from Basco.
Mount Iraya
• Is a dormant volcano standing at 1,517 meters whose last
eruption was recorded in 505 AD. Mountaineering, trekking
and trailblazing are recommended sports activities on the
mountain. Walking distance from Basco, the top of Mt. Iraya
can be reached in about three hours.
Built Attractions
• Basco Lighthouse and Naidi Hill
 is a lighthouse in the town of Basco in Batanes, the northernmost province in the
Philippine. Located in Naidi Hills in Barangay San Antonio, the lush green hills and
the open sea provides a beautiful backdrop for the lighthouse.
Old Loran Station
• was built in 1953 as a navigational facility that
provided an accurate system for defense operations of
the US Coast Guard during World War II.
Food and Delicacies
• Bangun a yuyunu (anchovies)
Vunes
• This is made of
preserved gabi (taro) stalks which
could technically last for years. As
a typical Batanes food,
the gabi stalks are first soaked in
water. Afterward, it will be cut and
minced and then cooked together
with pork and patola (or sponge
gourd).
Lataven
Luñis
• This is a different version
of the popular Filipino
dish, adobo, because luñis
is rather served dry. this
traditional dish is made of
pork cooked with rock salt
until its fat is rendered
and it turns golden
brown.
