Basic Electronics Components Explained

The document discusses the basic components of electronics. It describes resistors as devices that oppose electric current and lists two types: fixed resistors with constant resistance and variable resistors where resistance can change. It also describes capacitors as components that can store electric charges or voltages and lists different types classified by insulating material and as polarized or non-polar. Additionally, it outlines diodes, integrated circuits, coils, antennas, fuses, transformers and transistors as basic electronic components.

Lesson 72

BASIC COMPONENTS OF ELECTRONICS

RESISTOR

Devices made of

materials which resist or oppose the flow of electric current.

Fixed Resistor

VARIABLE RESISTOR

TYPE OF RESISTORS:
FIXED RESISTOR values are

fixed and constant. VARIABLE RESISTOR resistance can change/vary through manual setting.

STRUCTURE OF RESISTORS:
CARBON RESISTOR- where

resistance is derived from color coded carbon. WIREWOUND RESISTORresistance is derived from a length of wire wrapped around a core and covered with an insulating material.

CARBON RESISTOR

WIREWOUND RESISTOR

CAPACITORS:
Electronic components

which have the ability to store electrical charges or voltages.

TYPES OF CAPACITORS ACCORDING TO INSULATING MATERIALS

Electrolytic Mylar Polyester Air

Mica Tantalum Ceramics Paper

ELECTROLYTIC

MYLAR

POLYESTER

AIR

MICA

TANTALUM

CERAMICS

PAPER

CAPACITORS ARE CLASSIFIED AS POLARIZED AND NON - POLAR

POLARIZED One terminal is

positive; the other, negative and polarity is observe. NON POLAR- can be connected in any way in a circuit, without observing polarity.

POLARIZED

NON-POLAR

DIODES
Semiconductor devices

consisting of the anode which is positively charged, and the cathode (k), which is negatively charged.

KINDS OF DIODES

Rectifier Diodes- used to rectify and

convert an alternating current to a pulsating direct current (fluctuating direct current). Light Emitting Diodes (LED) works light a rectifier diodes except that they are used to indicate flow of electricity through emission of light. Zener Diodes Used to regulate heat.

ZENER DIODES

INTEGRATED CIRCUIT
Semiconductor with

active and passive elements used to perform complete electronic function.

INTEGRATED CIRCUIT

COIL
Used in electronic circuits to

introduce inductance, the tendency to oppose any change (increase or decrease) in the circuit current.

COIL

ANTENNA
A device for capturing

radio frequencies from space which are fed into a receiver.

ANTENNA

FUSE
Device rated in amperes

used to protect circuit components from damage due to overload.

FUSE

TRANSFORMER
Component used to step

up or step down the voltage.

TRANSFORMER

TRANSISTOR
A semiconductor device

with three electrodes which can function as a rectifier, amplifier or oscillator.
