1 Imagine you work for the HR Department of a large company.
Recently, there has been a string of robberies in the surrounding
area. Your boss has asked you to look into the company’s
security systems and recommend ways to strengthen them if
necessary. Use your imagination to fill in the details.
• 2. Your company cafeteria has become a source of employee
complaints. Your boss has asked you to conduct a survey of the
staff’s feelings of the cafeteria and write a report based on the
results, including recommendations for improvements if necessary.

• 3. You work at the head office of a major retailing company which
runs twenty stores around the country. Recently, one of the stores
has been losing money while all the other stores have been
increasing their revenues. Your boss has asked you to look into the
matter and write a report on your findings, giving recommendations
if necessary. Use your imagination to fill in the details.
WRITING A BUSINESS REPORT
• Write a report proposing a solution to a problem that has been
identified by management of a company or agency. Your report should
be three to four pages in length. Organize your report clearly and
logically. Give each section an appropriate heading. You may use the
following outline to plan your report, or make your own outline.
A. Problem
B. Recommendation
C. Rationale
D. Alternative Solutions
E. Appendix (Data)
Exam question
• The American rapper and musician John is going on tour in your
country. He has agreed to pay a one-hour visit to your school.
• The headmistress of your school has asked you to carry out a survey
amongst students and then write a report. She wants suggestions on:
+ an activity to do with John which involves as many students as
possible
+ a present to give John to say thank you for coming to visit your
school.
Write your report in about 180 words.
